As a child of the late 90s and early 2000s, I vividly remember the buzz surrounding Stan Lee’s Stripperella back in the day. The concept was intriguing, the cast was star-studded, and Pamela Anderson was… well, Pamela Anderson. However, as a kid, I couldn’t quite grasp its humor or appeal, finding it a bit too adult for my tastes.
Social media trend culture has a bizarre way of making everything timeless; all it takes is the right post, clip, or meme going viral for forgotten pieces of content to get whole new moment in the spotlight. Today’s latest example of this phenomenon is Stan Lee’s Stripperella, the adult animated supehero series that Marvel creator Stan Lee launched back in 2003. The series starred Baywatch bombshell Pamela Anderson in the lead vocal role of Erotica Jones/Stripperella, and only lasted one season – but now, thanks to social media, Marvel fans are having some renewed “curiosity” about how this series is even a thing…
The Crazy History of Stan Lee’s Stripperella Explained
In 2001, Stan Lee departed from Marvel to establish his own media production company, POW! Entertainment Inc./LLC, in partnership with Gill Champion and Arthur Lieberman. As head of the Entertainment division, Lee started proposing a diverse range of multi-media content centered around superheroes. One of the earliest projects that took flight was “Stripperella,” which was acquired by Paramount’s TNN network (later known as Spike TV). This animated series, featuring an adult-themed Pamela Anderson character, served as a key piece of content for the rebranded channel and garnered attention due to its provocative premise and Lee’s exploration into more mature themes.
As the gaming enthusiast I am, let me share some insights about my favorite animated series, “Stripperella.” Though I was only involved in the initial concept and character designs, I made it crystal clear to the subsequent writing and production crews that this wasn’t just a saucy title with an adult-oriented premise. Rather, it was intended as a comical satire, a witty take on societal norms and stereotypes. If you check out the clip below, I believe you’ll see that my vision for the show is still very much alive in its humor and style.
WATCH: CLIP FROM STAN LEE’S “STRIPPERELLA”
The video depicts Stipperella attempting to defuse a time bomb, but her efforts are hindered because every possible disposal spot is occupied by adorable or vulnerable individuals. In a stroke of luck, she discovers a collapsed mine sheltering orphans and puppies – an ideal location for the bomb! Stripperella manages to save the day amidst tension over whether her revealing outfit will survive the action. This scene serves as a humorous homage to the 1966 Batman movie, which showcased Batman struggling to dispose of a bomb with an unusually long fuse. The film’s sequence featured Batman racing around the docks, only to find nuns, couples in a boat, baby ducks, and even a marching band blocking his path. This iconic scene led to the memorable line from Batman that “Sometimes, you just can’t shake off a bomb.” It appears that the creators of Stripperella are fans of the 1966 Batman series and intend to pay tribute to this classic film – in their unique, comedic style.
It’s not difficult to understand why the show “Stripperella” ran for just one season consisting of 13 episodes: Its theme and content didn’t seem to resonate with any significant audience demographic. For many male viewers, it wasn’t titillating enough compared to their expectations; on the other hand, it wasn’t ‘superhero’ enough for that fanbase. In a time when adult-themed animation was still in its infancy, it struggled to find an audience.
In this captivating show, I’m thrilled to be part of the stellar cast alongside Pamela Anderson, Mark Hamill (from Star Wars), Dee Bradley Baker (known for Adventure Time and Avatar: The Last Airbender), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Thomas F. Wilson (Back to the Future), and voiceover artist extraordinaire Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants). Notably, Kid Rock also made an appearance in this series. However, the now-awkward choice of Vince McMahon as “Dirk McMahon,” a seedy rival strip club owner chasing after Erotica Jones, left quite an impression!
Stripperella Season 1 is available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
