Wicked: All of the Box Office Records Broken (So Far)

Wicked: All of the Box Office Records Broken (So Far)

As someone who has been a long-time fan of musical theater, I must say that the success of “Wicked” is nothing short of enchanting! The box office numbers are simply astounding and have left me spellbound! It’s impressive to see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo breaking records in their respective careers. And let’s not forget about the legendary Stephen Schwartz, whose work has once again proven timeless.

Something extremely impressive is heading our way. Judging by the ticket sales from the past weekend, it seems that the sensational stage version of the musical will continue to captivate audiences during Thanksgiving weekend, proving that it can defy expectations.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Wicked” is currently reigning at the box office with a staggering domestic weekend gross of $114 million. This figure is truly impressive, especially when you consider that the last numbers to reach such heights were during the summer, specifically the $211-million opening weekend of “Deadpool & Wolverine”. The film is already making history by breaking several box office records, promising a spectacle that’s not to be missed.

Wicked Has Broken Several Box Office Records in Its Opening Weekend

Initially, the film adaptation of “Wicked” has set new records for a movie based on a Broadway musical, surpassing both its global and domestic opening earnings. Previously, “Les Miserables” and “Into the Woods” held these titles with $103 million and $31 million respectively. On its opening day alone, “Wicked” captivated audiences to the tune of a staggering $114 million in the U.S. market.

For prominent figures like Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, producer Marc Platt, and Stephen Schwartz, they all achieved their highest domestic box office openings in their careers. At that time, Marc Platt set a new record with a $95.5 million opening for 2023’s “The Little Mermaid”. Musical director Stephen Schwartz, known for his prolific work, saw his record surpassed by over $70 million as “Enchanted” opened domestically with $34.4 million.

Ariana Grande, making her debut in a major movie role, set a record for the largest domestic opening among pop stars, surpassing the earnings of artists like Lady Gaga ($42.5 million from A Star Is Born), Michael Jackson ($around $21 million from The Wiz), Harry Styles ($19.3 million from Don’t Worry Darling), and Taylor Swift ($6.6 million from Cats). Notably, Cynthia Erivo also outperformed her initial opening of $12 million with Widows in 2018.

Wicked Is the Third-Best Debut of 2024

In the run-up to the $111 million debut of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, the musical “Wicked” has found a strong footing, surpassing “Inside Out 2” and being second only to “Deadpool & Wolverine”. When it comes to opening weekends among musicals, “Wicked” ranks fourth, following closely behind “The Lion King” (2019), “Beauty and the Beast” (2017) and “Frozen II” (2019). It’s worth noting that Idina Menzel, who voiced Elsa in “Frozen”, played the original role of Elphaba in “Wicked” on Broadway back in 2003.

A remarkable milestone achieved by “Wicked” is becoming the highest-grossing non-sequel film globally in 2023. This title was previously held by films that were either sequels or threequels this year. It’s worth mentioning that “Wicked” is a two-part movie, with part one currently playing and part two set to premiere on the big screen on November 21, 2025.
