As a dedicated fan of the Mass Effect series, I can’t help but feel a sense of profound disappointment upon learning about the closure of Humanoid Origin. The studio, founded by none other than Casey Hudson, was a beacon of hope for those of us yearning for another epic journey through the vast expanse of space.
2021 brought news about a fresh indie team comprising of AAA veterans, known as Humanoid Origin. This new studio was founded and set up by Casey Hudson, renowned for creating the Mass Effect series and directing the original trilogy, who previously held the position of general manager at BioWare. The studio initially announced they were working on a story-focused AAA science fiction game. However, it has since been confirmed that they are shutting down operations instead.
On LinkedIn, I learned from Humanoid Origin that an unexpected drop in finances has led them to close their doors. Sadly, this means they can no longer continue with their captivating sci-fi project, which leaves us fans eagerly waiting, hanging onto hope.
Earlier today, we shared with our team that Humanoid Origin will cease its operations. Regrettably, despite our attempts to safeguard the studio from wider issues within the industry, an unforeseen lack of funds has made it impossible for us to continue running the business.
It’s deeply unfortunate that we won’t finish building our latest sci-fi universe. Right now, our priority lies with our team members. We’re fully dedicated to helping them find new job opportunities.
This announcement certainly comes as a surprise, though this is sadly far from the only similar bruise that the games industry has suffered over the course of the last couple of years. Humanoid Origin was one of several promising indie AAA teams working on ambitious new projects, so the studio’s closure is definitely a gut punch, especially for fans of the Mass Effect series who were curious to see what its creator would come up with next.
