As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience, I have seen my fair share of true crime documentaries that leave more questions than answers. However, the upcoming Netflix series, Cold Case: JonBenét Ramsey, seems to be an exception. With its focus on the mishandling of the case by law enforcement and the media, it promises a fresh perspective on one of America’s most enduring mysteries.
Netflix is set to introduce a fresh true crime documentary into its collection, delving into one of the most notorious unsolved murders in U.S. history – the case of JonBenét Ramsey’s homicide.
Titled “Cold Case: JonBenét Ramsey”, this three-part series delves into the alleged mismanagement of the investigation by authorities and the media.
For more than twenty years now, the tragic death of JonBenét remains unsolved; the details surrounding her demise and the identity of the perpetrator continue to elude us.
“I believe this crime can be solved,” the documentary’s director Joe Berlinger told Today.com.
Now that the documentary is streaming on Netflix, delve deeper into the facts known surrounding the case of JonBenét and explore various theories about who might have been her assailant.
What happened to JonBenét Ramsey?
On the 26th of December, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey unexpectedly discovered that their daughter, JonBenét, was missing. They also found a note asking for a ransom of $118,000 in exchange for her safe return, which had been left at their residence.
Yet, it’s important to note that finding JonBenét’s body wasn’t a discovery made by someone else; instead, her father, John, found her in the basement of their home.
In the documentary, retired detective Bob Whitson reminisced about the case, saying, “From the start, I realized this was an unusual case. We hadn’t encountered anything quite like a kidnapping for ransom before.
Based on the autopsy report made public by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office the day following JonBenét’s death, it was determined that she died from strangulation-induced asphyxiation accompanied by head trauma.
JonBenét was discovered under a white coverlet, a nylon rope looped around her neck, her hands tied above her in restraints, and her mouth concealed by adhesive tape.
In the series, John recounted his actions: “I swiftly peeled off the tape and attempted to loosen the knot on her wrists, but it was exceptionally tight, and I couldn’t manage to undo it. So, in desperation, I shouted and picked her up, carrying her upstairs to seek assistance. The detectives examined her for a pulse, looked at me and confirmed that she had passed away.
Consequently her death was ruled as a homicide.
Who killed JonBenét Ramsey?
JonBenét Ramsey’s killer has never been identified.
According to John Ramsey’s documentary, people in the media and the general public started suspecting the family for the murder of JonBenét, a suspicion they have consistently and firmly refuted.
In simpler terms, Director Berlinger expressed strong belief to The New York Post that the Ramsey family is not guilty.
He also strongly believes that this situation can be resolved once the Boulder Police Department carries out its intended duties, as he stated in his interview.
He added that, as far as he’s concerned, several individuals who were initially considered possible perpetrators were cleared during the time of the murder.
Berlinger stated to the New York Post: “I believe all potential suspects should be reconsidered, including the Ramsey family. And they would likely agree, ‘Re-examine this case, but let’s conduct DNA testing.’ This isn’t a trial by media. I don’t want to subject people to what the Ramseys were subjected to.” (Paraphrased)
As a movie buff who values truth in storytelling, I’m calling for a fresh look into this mystery. Once the DNA evidence has been thoroughly re-examined, I believe it’s crucial to revisit the possible suspects again.
