As a long-time admirer of musicals and a die-hard fan of The Wizard of Oz, I eagerly await the release of Wicked: Part Two. Having grown up with Judy Garland’s enchanting portrayal of Dorothy, I can only imagine what it would be like to see her character brought back to life in this much-anticipated sequel.
The first part of Wicked has landed, transporting audiences back to the magical land of Oz.
The movie, divided into two segments, narrates events that transpire prior to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and her stroll on the famous Yellow Brick Road. It explores the bond between Glinda, the Good Witch (played by Ariana Grande), and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (portrayed by Cynthia Erivo). The storyline, somewhat perplexingly, spans time periods before, during, and after “The Wizard of Oz.
In “Wicked: Part One,” we follow the duo’s shared journey at Shiz University, where fate compels them to live as roommates, leading to a blossoming friendship over time.
In 2025, the sequel to “Wicked”, titled “Wicked: Part Two”, will continue the story, finding Elphaba firmly mastering her abilities and labeled as a fugitive by the government.
Certainly, spectators can’t help but ponder if and how the upcoming sequel might intertwine with “The Wizard of Oz,” and if Dorothy might make an appearance as a character. Here’s what we have gathered thus far.
Will Dorothy be in Wicked: Part Two?
There has been no confirmation that Dorothy will appear in Wicked: Part Two.
In a tribute to The Wizard of Oz in the first part, we observe Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion walking away from us along the Yellow Brick Road, sparking theories among some viewers that Dorothy could reappear in the second part.
In an interview with Variety about Dorothy’s appearance in Part One, director Jon M Chu explained: “The Wizard of Oz could be a dream. It’s a place without any genuine consequences. To make it clear to the viewers that Elphaba and Glinda reside in a world full of real challenges, we needed to remind them that this was all real.
He mentioned: “Thus, we placed everyone at the infamous crime scene – arguably the most renowned one in both cinema and literature, featuring the distinctive hat in the puddle.
As we take in the entirety of the Land of Oz, it becomes clear that it’s not just a fantastical realm but a thriving, dynamic land with distinct cultures of its own. This immediately sets it apart as a tangible, real place, rather than a mere figment of someone’s dream.
“Recognizing the four symbols brings up an association in your head – you link them to a specific location. We’ll encounter these symbols again in the next film.
Hinting at the possibility of Dorothy’s role being broadened for Wicked: Part Two, he mentioned: “Dorothy is present in the play. It’s inevitable for their paths to cross, and we can only suggest it so far. I won’t confirm whether she’s a character explicitly in the second movie. A part of me desires for each audience member’s interpretation of Dorothy to be unique.
He added: “And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to Part Two.”
Does Dorothy appear in the Broadway musical and what could this mean for Wicked: Part Two?
Dorothy isn’t officially part of the Broadway musical’s cast, but the show’s storyline intersects with Dorothy’s arrival and the events depicted in The Wizard of Oz.

In the credits for Wicked, no actress is officially listed as Dorothy, but there’s a buzz that Alisha Weir (famous for Matilda: The Musical) could be cast in that part.
