Haunted Mansion Expansion Opens at Disneyland

As a longtime Disneyland enthusiast and connoisseur of all things spooky, I must say that the recent expansion and transformation of the Haunted Mansion have left me absolutely enchanted! The new outdoor queue is nothing short of breathtaking – it’s like stepping into another world, one filled with the ghostly presence of Master Gracey and Madame Leota.

Starting from 2023, the Haunted Mansion underwent a significant transformation at the Disneyland Resort, officially opening its expanded grounds on Tuesday. This change includes an extended outdoor queue designed to immerse visitors deeper into the mansion’s eerie atmosphere. According to Disney Experiences, this new area showcases details inspired by the 999 ghostly inhabitants of the mansion, including Master Gracey and Madame Leota. The expansion adds to the story and lore of the dark ride, which celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2024.

In areas slightly beyond the freshly established Magnolia Park in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square, visitors will stroll past a pet cemetery and carriage-pulled funeral procession as they make their way through newly created gardens on the enlarged grounds of the Haunted Mansion. The exterior extension now boasts a tranquil garden retreat, designed by the late Master Gracey (who is buried in the queue’s vicinity). This peaceful sanctuary showcases a water fountain adorned with a sea maiden statue, an ornate wrought iron gazebo, and an astrological armillary sphere.

Before Madame Leota guides you to her sanctum in the spirit realm, you’ll pass through her peculiar garden, which appears to be charged with mysterious power. This garden houses a variety of unusual statues – frogs, lizards, rats, and even a monkey that plays cymbals. Additionally, it contains several crystal balls for fortune-telling. Overlooking the courtyard stands an enormous oak tree adorned by Leota with vibrant decorations, wind chimes, and bells that tinker in the wind, creating an ominous atmosphere as you approach her mansion.

Alongside unveiling the new queue for the Haunted Mansion, Disney also shared the name of an upcoming gift shop set to open this winter: Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond. Modeled after Leota’s carriage house, which once housed the mansion’s elaborate carriage displayed in the front yard, the carriage house served as home to the mansion’s head caretaker before being inhabited by the spirit guide. Inside Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, visitors can expect an array of unique furniture pieces such as crystal balls, a feinting couch, and the original parlor chandelier used by Leota during séances at the mansion. Antique artifacts will be showcased alongside spirited merchandise, creating an enchanting shopping experience.

Disney has shared that starting from now, the Haunted Mansion, adorned with decor inspired by “The Nightmare Before Christmas” for its seasonal Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, will no longer use the app-based virtual queue system. Instead, guests can explore the expanded grounds by waiting in the regular standby queue or expedite their access to the attraction using the new Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Premier Pass options.

Disneyland recently opened the new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride, located next door to the Haunted Mansion and Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, in the newly-renamed Bayou Country (formerly Critter Country) section of the park neighboring New Orleans Square.
