As a lifelong Marvel fanatic with a particular affinity for the grittier, edgier stories, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming “Ultimate Wolverine” series! The idea of Wolverine as the Winter Soldier, serving under the Rasputins and the Eurasian Republic, is a tantalizing twist on an already iconic character.
As a gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the action with the latest Marvel Comics release, “Ultimate Wolverine.” Written by Chris Condon, who brought us “That Texas Blood,” and illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccio, known for his work on “Moon Knight,” this title marks their debut in the Ultimate Universe.
In this world, instead of being Weapon X, the man called James Howlett/Logan is actually the Winter Soldier – a mutant assassin with a silenced weapon, who has had his memories erased and serves the Rasputins and the Eurasian Republic (previously known as Russia, one of the seven major territories governed by the Maker’s Council).
In the trailer, we see Winter Soldier (Wolverine) engaging in a wild battle with characters from the Maker’s Council: Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), Illyana Rasputina (Magik), and Arkady Rossovich (Omega Red). It also offers brief insights into his backstory, revealing that he was created as a weapon by the evil Reed Richards from an alternate universe called the Maker.
The upcoming series, Ultimate Wolverine, is set to introduce two new mutants in the Ultimate Universe: a shape-shifter with blue skin named Mystique, who fights for mutant rights as part of The Opposition, and Kurt Wagner, also known as Nightcrawler, a teleporter priest.
In response to editor Wil Moss inquiring if I was interested in working on this project, I eagerly accepted and quickly developed a plan. I’m planning to infuse my unique storytelling style from “That Texas Blood” into the Marvel Universe through “Wolverine”. By looking back at its history and creating something fresh and original, I aim to contribute to it.
He added, “You may find a Red Star emblem on his attire, which might pique your curiosity.” Explaining further, “Take a closer look at the mask; you’ll see it has a snout, indicating his untamed nature.
The character known as “Ultimate Winter Soldier” will make his first appearance in the special issue “Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1″ (on sale December 11). Following this, he’ll reappear in “Ultimate Wolverine #1″ (available January 15), marking his continuation in the second year of the Ultimate Universe.
