Pirates of the Caribbean Star Sinks Hopes of Ever Returning to the Franchise

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the silver screen world, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia upon hearing the news about Keira Knightley’s decision to step away from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Swann was not just iconic, but it played a significant role in shaping my own cinematic landscape during those formative years.

Keira Knightley won’t reprise her role as Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean series for a fifth time. Over the years between 2003 and 2017, the English actress portrayed Elizabeth Swann opposite Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp in four Pirates movies within the swashbuckling franchise. In most installments, she played the governor’s daughter turned pirate queen. However, Disney is planning two new Pirates of the Caribbean films without Knightley, as she has chosen to step away from franchise acting.

Knightley stated to the U.K.’s Times that she can’t travel for work abroad at this time. She feels it wouldn’t be fair to those employers and she doesn’t wish to do so. Since she has chosen to have children, her priority is raising them, which means she’s had to significantly reduce her professional commitments.

In the Pirates of the Caribbean series by Gore Verbinski, Keira Knightley played a crucial character named Elizabeth Swann across three films: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man’s Chest (2006), and At World’s End (2007). She briefly reappeared in the 2017 film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. This film marked Elizabeth Swann’s reunion with her husband, Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, after a decade apart. A post-credit scene hinted at the possible return of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and the potential comeback of both Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.

Despite cherishing her memories from working on the Pirates movies, she definitively declined any possibility of rejoining the series where she shared leading roles with Bloom and Depp.

“It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time. I was seen as sh-t because of them, and yet because they did so well I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for,” the Pride & Prejudice and Imitation Game star said. “They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”

“The hours [on Pirates] are insane. It’s years of your life, you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, what you’re filming,” she continued.

In a different phrase, you can say: In the Netflix Christmas thriller titled “Black Doves”, Knightley is featured alongside Ben Whishaw, known for his role in “Paddington”. This six-episode series revolves around their characters, an unusual spy and assassin duo, who together expose a wide-reaching conspiracy within London’s criminal underworld. At present, Knightley is working on the murder mystery set aboard a ship titled “The Woman in Cabin 10”, co-starring Guy Pearce and Hannah Waddingham. This film may bring her closest to sailing the seas again, reminiscent of her days in “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

In June, Bruckheimer shared an exclusive update about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film with ComicBook, a project that Jeff Nathanson, the writer of “Young Woman and the Sea,” is penning.

Currently, we’re working on a draft for a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, let’s cross our fingers that Disney approves it so we can move forward with production. As previously mentioned in an interview with ComicBook, this project is more feasible compared to Tom Cruise’s Top Gun 3 because we don’t need to wait for specific actors. With Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Johnny Depp not returning, the franchise is exploring a reboot featuring Margot Robbie as the lead star and producer.
