As a long-time X-Men enthusiast, let me tell you, the upcoming storylines for Uncanny X-Men are shaping up to be absolutely thrilling! The return of the Outliers to school and their subsequent hunt by the terrifying Bloodhounds is reminiscent of my own days as a young mutant in rural America. I remember the constant fear of discovery, the struggle to find acceptance, and the joy of discovering new powers – all experiences that these young characters will undoubtedly face.
The contemporary X-Men team is persistently pursued by a new breed of Sentinels. These mechanical assassins, conceived in 1965 during X-Men #14, when Dr. Bolivar Trask unleashed his inventions against Professor Charles Xavier’s initial group of X-Men, have been relentlessly chasing mutants ever since. Throughout the years, Sentinels have advanced significantly: from the Tri-Sentinel and Nimrod to the Omega Sentinel, and even Stark Sentinels built with Iron Man technology, all serving Orchis’ anti-mutant agenda in their attempts to eliminate mutantkind. These Sentinels share a common objective: suppressing mutant dominance.
In the latest installment of the “Sentinels” series by Alex Paknadel and Justin Mason, Lawrence Trask’s genetically advanced son, a precog mutant, has formed a squad of technologically enhanced Cyborg Sentinels to apprehend dangerous mutants for imprisonment at Graymalkin Prison, which was previously Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
Becca Constance Simon-Pinette, known as Calico with a psychic bond to her horse Ember, Sofia Yong (also called Jitter due to her quick concentration of any talent or skill), Valentin Correa (Ransom, the mutant who has a void instead of a heart), and Hoturu (Deathdream for his power to transition between life and death, controlling the power of the undead in his spectral “death state”) are the young X-Men trainees.
After making their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #1 back in August, the Outliers will now integrate into a regular school setting in this Wednesday’s Uncanny X-Men #6, preparing them for their part in the upcoming crossover event Raid on Graymalkin with the X-Men.
Starting in January, the “Hunted by the Pack” storyline begins for the Uncanny X-Men #9 issue. In this narrative, a group called the Outliers are pursued by the Bloodhounds, which are advanced, stealthy Sentinels modeled after dogs and equipped with heightened senses and chainsaw-like teeth, designed for tracking down and eliminating mutants as described in Marvel’s storyline.
In the gaming world I’d say: “Starting next month, from Uncanny X-Men #10 through #13, acclaimed artist Luciano Vecchio is bringing some incredible solo variant covers for Calico, Jitter, Ransom, and Deathdream. This series will especially highlight ‘Hunted by the Pack,’ so keep your eyes peeled!
