As a gamer who grew up in the golden age of gaming, I can confidently say that the PlayStation 2 (PS2) holds a special place in my heart and in the history books of our beloved industry. The console that introduced me to iconic games like Grand Theft Auto III, Final Fantasy X, and Metal Gear Solid has now officially extended its lead as the best-selling game console of all time, with a whopping 160 million units sold worldwide!
The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is widely regarded as the most iconic hardware in the gaming industry, a claim supported by its impressive sales figures. For years, it has stood as the best-selling console of all time, with new records occasionally being set.
Previously reported, the PlayStation 2 had sold approximately 155 million units worldwide; however, this number was later revised upwards by its former CEO, Jim Ryan, earlier this year, stating that the console actually reached a sales figure of 160 million. Now, Sony has officially confirmed this updated number through their newly launched PlayStation timeline website, which includes these sales figures in the section dedicated to the PS2.
To clarify, the PlayStation 2 continues its title as the best-selling video game console ever, surpassing its previous sales record by an additional 5 million units according to recent official data. Meanwhile, the Nintendo DS trails in second place with over 154 million units sold, and the Nintendo Switch follows closely behind in third place with more than 146 million units sold as of late September.
The Switch is anticipated to maintain a consistent sales rate for quite some time, making it intriguing to watch whether or when it will surpass the PS2 in sales.
