As an avid fan who has been following the Japanese manga scene for years, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming Netflix adaptation of “The Summer Hikaru Died.” Having read the original manga, I can attest to its eerie and captivating narrative that left me on the edge of my seat.
Netflix has secured rights for another popular anime series that fans should be eagerly anticipating this coming summer, and the initial sneak peek at “The Summer Hikaru Died” has been unveiled in its first teaser trailer. Since its initial release with Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace magazine in 2021, Mokumokuren’s “The Summer Hikaru Died” has quietly gained a significant following. With the upcoming premiere of its TV anime adaptation, this captivating and eccentric series will soon be enjoyed by an even wider audience as they discover why it’s been so intriguing to date.
Initially slated for development earlier this Spring, “The Summer Hikaru Died” is now officially set to premiere on Japanese TV sometime during the Summer 2025 anime season (commencing in July). The series has been granted a worldwide release by Netflix, with a tentative “soon” launch date, yet no definite release date has been confirmed at the time of this article’s publication. For those eager to catch a glimpse of the new anime, the teaser trailer and first poster for “The Summer Hikaru Died” can be found in the video above and below respectively.
What Is The Summer Hikaru Died?
Originally penned by Mokumokuren for Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace, “The Summer Hikaru Died” is a chilling tale centered around two close companions, Yoshiki and Hikaru (who might have had more than friendship between them). One fateful day, Hikaru disappears only to return changed. It becomes evident to Yoshiki that this isn’t the same Hikaru he once knew. Instead of keeping his distance from the altered Hikaru, Yoshiki finds himself inexplicably drawn towards him and remains by his side, regardless of the otherworldly mysteries surrounding him. As if that wasn’t enough, a greater peril lurks in the shadows.
Ryohei Takeshita (known for “Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night”) is taking charge as director for an upcoming series titled “The Summer Hikaru Died,” produced by Cygames Pictures, the team behind “Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Beginning of a New Era.” Takeshita will also be responsible for scripting the new series, with Yuichi Takahashi handling character design and chief animation direction. The main characters will be voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi and Shuichiro Umeda, while Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indou will play supporting roles. With a summer release scheduled for next year, fans can expect more specific details in the upcoming months.
Netflix Is Really Amping Up Its Anime Game
Over the past couple of years, Netflix has been consistently expanding its anime collection, and The Summer Hikaru Died is one of the latest examples of their original works or licensed productions. This upcoming title is already generating buzz as a significant anime release for 2025, indicating that next year could be another strong one for Netflix’s anime offerings.
The brief teaser along sets up the ominous atmosphere that fans of the manga have been praising. This series has been garnering a lot of awards talk here in the United States, and it’s likely that it will find a whole new audience with this new anime. And when added on top of Netflix’s worldwide distribution, The Summer Hikaru Died might go from being a cult horror hit to being one of the blockbuster anime franchises with a long future. It’s already happened with Dandadan this year, so there’s precedent for that kind of explosion in popularity.
