As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for comic book lore, I find myself deeply enamored with the return of Tony Stark’s Silver Centurion Armor in the latest West Coast Avengers series. The Silver Centurion, with its sleek design and advanced tech, has always been one of my favorite Iron Man suits. Its debut back in 1985 was a game-changer for Stark, allowing him to take down his ruthless rival, the Iron Monger.
From its initial appearance in 1962’s Tales to Astonish #39, billionaire inventor Tony Stark has consistently improved and modernized his Iron Man armor. The primitive Model 1, powered by batteries and made of metal to shield his heart from shrapnel, was followed by the sleeker and lighter Model 2 with palm-based repulsors. Later, he redesigned the suit for a more form-fitting and flexible version, equipped with bracelets that enabled him to activate the chest beam’s polarized unit quickly, eliminating the need to carry his attache case.
In 1985, Stark unveiled his most advanced armor, the Model 8, in issue #200 of Iron Man. This suit, later known as the Silver Centurion Armor, was built at the West Coast Avengers Compound in California. Stark employed its cutting-edge technology – including cloaking devices, disruptor field generators, a protective force field, energy-absorbing coating, new pulse bolts, and increased strength and speed – to vanquish Obadiah Stane, his business adversary who had illicitly used Stark tech to don the Iron Monger armor.
In essence, after fearing that resuming the Iron Man role might lead him back to alcoholism, Stark – for a while – stepped away, letting Jim Rhodes wear the iconic red and gold suit. However, during the Armor Wars, he utilized the Silver Centurion Iron Man armor until the end of that conflict. The storyline that influenced the 2010 movie “Iron Man 2” saw Stark confronting villains armed with his stolen technology by Justin Hammer, such as Stingray, Crimson Dynamo, and Titanium Man. Riddled with guilt over people being harmed due to his tech during Armor Wars, Stark retired the Silver Centurion in 1988’s “Iron Man” #232 and went back to wearing the red and gold suit (Model 9) once more.
In the 1980s, the Iron Man character, with his silver and red suit, joined Hawkeye’s team of powerful Earth heroes based in California, which was first featured in West Coast Avengers (Vol. 2) #1. This association lasted until issue #31. Recently, in this week’s West Coast Avengers (Vol. 4) #1 by Gerry Duggan (Invincible Iron Man) and Danny Kim (Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance), Tony Stark re-joined the team. However, he is currently facing issues with his armor due to Justine Hammer and the collaboration of Roxxon and A.I.M, as depicted in Spencer Ackerman and Julius Ohta’s Iron Man series. While in Los Angeles, Stark finds himself under attack by a terrorist group known as the Sovereign Sons.
Stark finds shelter in a storage space he rented during his initial stay in California and retrieves the briefcase carrying the Silver Centurion artifact. “She’s always been my favorite,” Stark remarks as he prepares to wear the vintage suit, which runs on car batteries.
When Iron Man forms the fresh West Coast Avengers squad – War Machine, Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), and newcomers Blue Bolt (Chad Braxton) and Ultron, who are part of the new Avengers’ parole program from prison – it is Blue Bolt, with his electric abilities, who gives Iron Man a boost, allowing them to vanquish the Sovereign Sons. Meanwhile, in Santa Monica, Stark unveils that he has bought an old airport to convert into an Avengers headquarters, ensuring Earth’s most powerful superheroes can protect the West Coast swiftly and efficiently from any location within minutes.
