Stranger Things Star Confirms Return for Season 5 (Even Though They Died)

As a dedicated fan of Stranger Things, who has spent countless hours immersed in the Upside Down world of Hawkins, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the possibility that Dr. Martin Brenner, or “Papa” as we fondly know him, might not be as dead as he appears. Matthew Modine’s recent comments have certainly stirred up some intriguing questions and theories among fans.

In simpler terms, The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” is approaching, implying that any character could meet their end. Yet, the resurrection of deceased characters seems to be a possibility, hinted by one of the show’s main stars – an actor we didn’t expect to return for the final season as they appeared to have perished in previous episodes!

WARNING: STRANGER THINGS SEASON 5 SPOILER FOLLOWS!

In a recent interview with Vulture, titled “Matthew Modine Questions If His ‘Stranger Things’ Time Is Truly Over,” actor Matthew Modine hints that his character, Dr. Martin Brenner (also known as “Papa” in the series), might not be as deceased as it seemed in the second-to-last episode of Season 4 of Stranger Things.

Modine expressed his discomfort about Brenner being deceased, then posed some intriguing questions for fans: “There are three things I find puzzling: How did Brenner manage to survive encounters with both the Demogorgon and ‘One’? Why couldn’t Eleven use her powers against Dr. Brenner when she effortlessly took out three guards, and why was he immune to her attacks? Could there be something mysterious about Brenner that we haven’t discovered yet?

Will Stranger Things Season 5 Reveal Martin Brenner’s Secret Powers?

Stranger Things Star Confirms Return for Season 5 (Even Though They Died)

A popular fan theory suggests that Dr. Martin Brenner, who appears to be merely the president of the small psychic clinic, may secretly also be a client himself. In other words, some fans don’t find it convincing that Henry Creel/One is the only psychically gifted individual hidden within Hawkins Lab; they speculate that Dr. Brenner has been one of the government’s original operatives with psychic abilities all along.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder if Brenner isn’t just another manipulative administrator exploiting children for their psychic talents; instead, he could be deeply intertwined with Henry Creel and Eleven, both possibly being reflections of his own harrowing experiences in precursors to MKUltra. Considering Brenner’s strict compartmentalization, it wouldn’t surprise me if he concealed the true extent of his psychic prowess, all while pushing these children to their mental and emotional limits, unleashing or honing their psychic potential.

By living on and disclosing his special abilities, Brenner could pave the way for innovative strategies on how the Hawkins team might ultimately vanquish Vecna and permanently seal the gap between our world and the Upside Down. If Brenner indeed possesses powers, these abilities might encompass uncanny foresight into the shadowy realm and Vecna, along with telekinetic strength capable of overpowering the demonic horde and closing the interdimensional gateway.

For sure, it’s quite exciting to anticipate that Matthew Modine might reappear in the concluding episodes of “Stranger Things”. It’s even more intriguing if El and her father figure, “Papa”, share a powerful psychic scene together – a moment that could be truly epic.

Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025.
