■ Combat System

With Steam Early Access launch drawing nearer, there’s growing interest in the game mechanics and features of our upcoming title, Chrono Sword. To satisfy the curiosity of gamers worldwide, CFK and 21c.Ducks are preparing to reveal all facets of the game to the public.

In the realm of action role-playing games, battle mechanisms play a crucial part in gameplay. The game Chrono Sword, while retaining the action-oriented aspects typical of the souls-like genre, introduces fresh nuances specifically tailored for Chrono Sword. This is all aimed at enhancing player immersion. Let’s delve into the cutting-edge combat systems that Chrono Sword offers.

As a seasoned gamer, diving into Chrono Sword feels like stepping into the gritty world of Soulslikes. However, instead of the usual slow-paced, strategic battles, this game amps up the intensity with a host of quick attack commands, turning each encounter into an exhilarating dance of swordplay.

1) Quick Evade

Rather than rolling, a swift press on the dodge button lets players nimbly avoid enemy assaults.

Instead of simply rolling away from danger to dodge attacks, the term “evade” offers a more reliable method for detecting and dodging enemy assaults, enabling players to not only escape harm but also position themselves effectively for a retaliatory strike.

2) Attack Cancel

When under attack, pressing the action cancel button at the right moment enables players to stop their ongoing attack and instantly transition to another swift attack, block, or evasion. The precision and speed of canceling attacks may differ based on the chosen weapon.

3) Finishing Attacks

If players execute an attack cancel by driving their character through an adversary, the foe will temporarily kneel due to a quick stun effect. If players approach the kneeling enemy and hit the interaction key, they can unleash a powerful finishing move that inflicts significant damage.

4) Skill Attacks

If players press a specific directional key during the process of powering up a strong assault, they’ll execute a unique ability attack that dramatically alters the course of the attack. Every weapon comes with two command skill attacks to use strategically.

5) Useable Items

Players can use a variety of items in combat by pressing the Use Item button.

The Chrono Sword boasts a variety of both close-quarter and long-range weaponry options. It’s capable of shooting arrows that deal extra damage from afar or keep foes at bay in a stunned condition, while whetstones can infuse weapons with fire, frost, or electrical attributes.

■ About the Game

The game titled “Chrono Sword” is a role-playing action game with pixel art graphics, created by 21c.Ducks, a team from South Korea. This game immerses you in a dark gothic fantasy world called Adelnor, where players journey through both the past and future to unravel its hidden mysteries.

Back in 2019, I stumbled upon this Soulslike action RPG that quickly caught my attention with its captivating pixel graphics and engaging gameplay. It sparked intrigue not just in Korea but also globally. In a remarkable turn of events, it was chosen as the initial project for the collaboration campaign between North American crowdfunding giant Kickstarter and Game Round.Inc, a renowned global game testing platform, in 2020. Thanks to this partnership, it managed to surpass its funding goal by gathering over seventy thousand dollars.

Chrono Sword represents a fresh approach to the Soulslike genre, distinguishing itself from 3D action RPGs currently available by opting for pixel art and a quarter-view perspective in its Soulslike design. Since the unveiling of this game, indie team 21c.Ducks has dedicated their time, effort, and passion into crafting an engaging narrative and enhancing the action and role-playing aspects of their Souls-like creation.

In a nod to retro gaming aesthetics, the game titled Chrono Sword showcases its expansive, three-dimensional universe utilizing pixel art. Gamers assume the role of a time explorer, roaming uninhibited across the past, present, and future within maps that offer smooth transitions between periods without the inconvenience of loading screens. The creative minds behind 21c.Ducks have showcased Chrono Sword in various gaming events domestically and internationally, garnering attention and accolades for its engaging gameplay. They leveraged this recognition to enhance both the gameplay mechanics and level design further.

Furthermore, it combines popular elements from the Soulslike genre with innovative mechanisms that lead to faster, more intense combat sequences.

At the Tokyo Game Show 2024, the latest demo of “Chrono Sword” was showcased at the Happinet booth. This new version managed to captivate numerous players due to its emphasis on action and RPG aspects, a departure from the demo presented during the Kickstarter campaign which focused more on different elements.

Based on this growing curiosity, Chrono Sword took part in Steam Next Fest commencing October 14, 2024. During this event, it was showcased to an even wider audience of gamers worldwide. To further pique interest, a version with expanded content compared to the one presented at Tokyo Game Show 2024 was unveiled.

21c. In 2015, ducks embarked on their journey with the mobile game “Timing Hero.” They followed this up by launching “Super Pixel Racers” on PC in 2018, showcasing their talents in game development and increasing recognition for their company. Their next release, “Chrono Sword,” was nominated for several prestigious awards at the Busan Indie Connect Festival (BIC) in 2019, including the Grand Prix, Judge Selection, and Excellence in Art categories. In 2022, it won a special award for excellence at the Burning Beaver festival.
