Actor Julien Arnold Dies in Theater During Christmas Carol Performance

As a dedicated follower of the theater community, I am deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Julien Arnold. His passion for the stage was evident in every role he played, and his talent was a beacon that guided countless performances at various theaters across Canada.

The theater community is mourning a tragic loss.

Born in Canada, Julien Arnold – the creator of the Shakespeare theater company Free Will Players – passed away on November 24th following a health incident that occurred during a staging of ‘A Christmas Carol‘ at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. He was 60 years old.

At around 8:28 p.m., paramedics responded to the theater where Arnold, playing various roles in a production, required resuscitation efforts. Unfortunately, he was declared dead at the scene, as confirmed by Kerry Williamson of Alberta Health Services to CBC News on November 26th, without revealing the exact nature of his health issue.

Due to the sad news of Arnold’s passing, the theater has decided to adjust the performance dates for their production of “A Christmas Carol,” originally set to end on December 24th. This change is made to give the actors and crew a chance to mourn, ensuring they have time to process their feelings.

Arnold hails from Edmonton and earned his education at the University of Alberta. Spanning over several decades, his career has been deeply rooted in theater, gracing stages with performances in plays like “The Taming of the Shrew“, “The Wizard of Oz“, “Twelfth Night“, and “Sense and Sensibility“. Beyond appearing on stage for companies such as Citadel Theatre, Northern Light Theatre, and Workshop West Theatre, he was one of the pioneers who established the theater company Free Will Players. This group is renowned for organizing Edmonton’s annual Freewill Shakespeare Festival.

They stated to CBC News on November 26 that his presence made every role more vibrant with joy, emotion, and richness. His artistic offerings, as well as his warm embraces, will be greatly missed.

Rijn and Cloran went on to say, “For now, let’s grant us some quiet and understanding as we prioritize helping our family, the team at Christmas Carol, and our customers during these moments.
