Julia Roberts and the Notting Hill sequel

As a devoted fan of Richard Curtis’ romantic comedies, I must say that his work has always had a special place in my heart. From ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ to ‘Notting Hill’, his films have managed to capture the essence of love and relationships in a way that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide.

Following the massive success of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral,’ writer Richard Curtis penned another romantic comedy titled ‘Notting Hill,’ which featured Hugh Grant once more, but this time it was Julia Roberts who assumed the female role as Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls for Grant’s character, William Thacker, the owner of a bookstore in London. However, the media’s obsession with her strained their relationship. The film became a box office sensation, raking in nearly $364 million globally. Given this success, one might wonder what became of Julia Roberts and the potential ‘Notting Hill’ sequel?

Richard Curtis has been questioned about creating follow-ups for all his movies, but responded, “Probably not. I’ve already done four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief, which served as mini sequels to Love Actually, and those have filled my creative needs.” However, he shared a concept for a Notting Hill sequel, saying, “I attempted a storyline where they were going to get divorced!

When the concept was presented to Julia Roberts, Curtis responded by saying, “Julia found it a terribly unappealing idea.” And that was the end of it. Hugh Grant, speaking about his character Thacker, called him ‘disgusting’, stating, “When I’m flipping through channels at home after a few drinks and this comes on, I can’t help but think, ‘Why doesn’t my character have any courage?'” He expressed this sentiment during an interview, adding, “In the movie, there’s a scene where she’s in my house and the paparazzi come to the door and ring the bell. Instead of confronting them, I let her go past me and open the door. That’s abysmal.

Grant remarked, “No woman I’ve been with, whether a girlfriend or now wife, hasn’t asked me, ‘Why didn’t you intervene? What’s wrong with you?'” He further stated, “I don’t have a good explanation for that – it’s just the way things played out. And I find him utterly contemptible.
