As someone who grew up on the shores of Motonui and spent countless hours sailing the seas with Moana, I have to say that my feelings about Moana 2 are a bit mixed. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see our beloved heroine embarking on another grand adventure, meeting new allies, battling powerful villains, and saving the world once again.
For eight long years now, Moana has ventured to unexplored realms within Disney’s Polynesian-themed imaginary realm, garnering both critical acclaim and financial success. Unfortunately, the much-awaited second installment has fallen short with critics who feel that it prioritizes worldbuilding over storytelling coherence. Despite this, Moana 2 has shattered box office records, sparking widespread conversations among viewers about its puzzling finale and its mid-credit scene.
WARNING: MOANA 2 SPOILERS!
In the fast-paced adventure of “Moana 2”, fresh adversaries, companions, and ancient enchantments unfold. However, due to its succinct 100-minute duration, the narrative may not provide complete clarity for some viewers as they exit the theater. This can be attributed to the fact that the storyline of “Moana 2” initially originated from a TV series before being adapted into a film. To help clarify the complex ending of “Moana 2”, let’s delve into its key plot points.
What’s at Stake in Moana 2?
On her journey, Moana (played by Auli’i Cravalho) unearths artifacts from long-lost civilizations that have since become disconnected from the people of Motonui. As she delves deeper into this mystery, she discovers the vengeful deity Nalo (voiced by Tofiga Fepulea’i), who chose to wreak havoc on mankind by breaking the bonds between tribes.
In ancient times, the enigmatic island of Motufetu was the mysterious key to navigating vast oceans and exploring distant lands. Yet, the cunning Nalo sank Motufetu, summoning a tempestuous storm to ward off any intruders from approaching its hidden depths. Legends speak that only a human’s touch can resurrect Motufetu, restoring the currents and allowing tribes to reconnect once more. Without this connection, each isolated community risks fading into obscurity, lost forever to the annals of history. As I sat watching this captivating tale unfold on the big screen, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the adventure that awaited the protagonist and the fate of these forgotten tribes.
In the sequel titled “Moana 2”, the storyline centers around a group from Motonui, guided by Moana herself, embarking on an ocean voyage in search of Motufetu. Their objective is to lift Nalo’s curse, enabling people everywhere to collaborate once more in constructing a brighter future. Any setbacks would be disastrous, as it would grant Nalo his wish – the eradication of all evidence of human existence.
What Happens During the Fight Against Nalo?
To reach Motufetu, Moana and her companions were guided by a star summoned by the spirit of Tautai Vasa (Gerald Ramsey), the last traveler from Motonui who departed the island long ago before Moana 2. Since he himself could not make it to Motufetu, Tautai Vasa is guiding Moana so she can accomplish her mission and lift Nalo’s curse.
During her journey, Moana seeks assistance from the Kakamora pirates, reconnects with Maui (portrayed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), and also receives aid from Matangi (voiced by Awhimai Fraser), a spiritual figure confined within a massive clam due to Nalo. It is Matangi who instructs Moana on the use of the Gate of the Gods, enabling her to travel swiftly to Motufetu’s nearby regions rather than enduring lengthy sea voyages.
As the heroes draw near to Motufetu, they devise a strategy. Nalo’s animosity towards humans ensures that the god’s tempest trails Moana and the Motonui team, granting Maui the opportunity to employ his magical Fish Hook to lift Motufetu from its ocean depths. When the island floats above water, either Moana or any of her companions must step foot on it for the storm to abate and the waterways to heal.
Although I’d hoped things would go smoothly, it didn’t work out that way. Nalo’s lightning struck Maui before he could summon Motufetu, obliterating his tattoos. Desperate, I plunged deep, swimming towards Motufetu. Seeing my intentions, Nalo retaliated with a bolt of lightning, striking me down. I touched the island, shattering the curse, but not before Nalo’s blast found its mark, seemingly ending my life. However, this isn’t an ending filled with sorrow, for I was swiftly resurrected, stronger than ever.
Is Moana a Demigod now?
When Maui understands the situation, he swiftly dives into the water to save Moana. Unfortunately, it’s already too late, so all Maui can do is sing a powerful chant and wait. Not long after, Moana’s ancestors, including Tautai Vasa and her grandmother, Tala (portrayed by Rachel House), appear by his side. With the combined strength of their spirits, they bestow upon Moana the vitality she requires to revive. Her resurrection brings about some remarkable changes, as a series of tattoos now adorn her left arm, symbolizing her extraordinary accomplishment: breaking Nalo’s curse. In the very same scene, Maui also regains his own collection of tattoos.
Maori tattoos symbolize spirituality, as seen in Maui, a semi-divine figure, who bears extensive ink all over his body. These tattoos signify his strength and chronicle his greatest accomplishments. Essentially, they serve as proof of his demigod prowess, making the stripping of them by Nalo’s lightning a crushing loss.
Despite the fact that Moana 2 doesn’t explicitly refer to its protagonist as a demigod, she follows in Maui’s footsteps. Just like Maui harnesses his abilities through his fish hook, Moana receives an enchanted oar from her ancestors’ spirits, which revives her. In the climax of the sequel, Moana uses her oar to alter the flow of the ocean currents, a feat reminiscent of a demigod. Her oar even glows golden in this scene, emphasizing that Moana now possesses magical powers, much like Maui.
In the future, Moana 3, when it arrives, could explore more about Moana’s semi-divine nature. It is crucial to recall that Nalo continues to scheme against mankind. Simultaneously, Moana employs the repaired Motufetu current to heal the fractured relationships among tribes.
Moana 2 is currently available in theaters.
