‘This is definitely the last one’

As a seasoned critic with decades of television viewing under my belt, allow me to share my thoughts on the return of Gavin & Stacey. Having been a faithful viewer since its inception, I can confidently say that this reunion is a heartwarming delight not to be missed.

How did you feel when Ruth and James told you this was the end?

Indeed, I didn’t anticipate such a delightful surprise! Revisiting Gwen once more was truly exhilarating. However, it’s clear that this is the final installment. The conclusion will unfold on the joyous occasion of Christmas Day.

What makes you so sure that this is definitive?

Based on what’s clearly marked as “THE FINALE” on my script, I wholeheartedly trust that this is indeed the final installment, penned by James and Ruth. To me, it’s undoubtedly the last one. Moreover, I was delighted to have a touching line to conclude Gwen’s story – it carries a profound impact.

Was it fun to film — or sad?

Revisiting fun times: Recording inside the house once more – perched on the same couch I sat on 17 years back. Memories of fantastic scenes surged through me. There’s a possibility that I might collaborate with Jo again, or Ruth, or [director] Chris Gernon. However, our unique blend will never be reunited once more.

People get a shock when they meet me – I’m ruder than Gwen!

Is there anything you can tell us about the storyline?

Absolutely not! In all truthfulness, I don’t believe it’s something people are eager to find out. To be specific, my friends and relatives have expressed that they prefer waiting till Christmas Day itself. It’s all part of the anticipation.

Is Gwen the role that you’re most recognised for?

Indeed, affirmative! On the opposite side of the globe, I found myself entering a museum in Sydney, when a lady at the reception seemed taken aback. However, it appears that encounters with me often lead to surprise – I might come off as slightly more brusque than Gwen.

Is there anything you do have in common with her?

Indeed, she values her family deeply, just as I do. Family comes before all else for me too. However, our culinary skills differ; she’s an exceptional cook compared to my modest abilities in the kitchen. She is truly a charming individual.

We’ve seen a West Christmas in Barry — is yours similar?

Typically, I’m involved in pantomime performances, but similar to the Wests and the Shipmans, I prioritize spending Christmas with my loved ones.
