As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book adventures under my belt, I must say that the latest turn of events for Firestar in West Coast Avengers has me both intrigued and saddened. Having followed her character since her debut in the 80s, it’s heart-wrenching to see her struggling to shake off the stigma from her Orchis days. It’s like being a longtime fan of an underdog sports team only to see them make a costly mistake during the championship game – you just want to shout “Not now, Firestar!

A beloved X-Men figure encounters their lowest point simultaneously with being enlisted for a fresh Avengers squad. As the Krakoan era concludes and X-Men: From the Ashes unfolds, we’re witnessing several popular X-Men characters resurface in various new series. Interestingly, some of these comics aren’t directly linked to the X-Men. For instance, Storm has not only a new solo series but also appears in Avengers. Another upcoming Avengers comic is West Coast Avengers, and Iron Man and War Machine have expanded their team by recruiting an additional X-Man – alas, this individual seems quite dejected.

In issue #1 of the West Coast Avengers, the creative team consisting of Gerry Duggan, Danny Kim, Arthur Hesli, and VC’s Joe Caramagna present the storyline. The narrative revolves around the West Coast Avengers attempting to reform Ultron, but it appears this task may not be as straightforward as anticipated. The first issue concludes with Tony Stark reaching out to Firestar to invite her to join their ranks. Tony has had difficulties in the past when trying to turn superhumans from the prison system into heroes. He hopes that having a respected figure like Firestar on the team will serve as a positive influence.

It appears that Firestar is currently socializing at The Bar With No Name, a popular spot among supervillains. This may be because her undercover work as an X-Men agent within Orchis, the anti-mutant organization, has given her a questionable reputation. However, this doesn’t make her an ideal mentor for villains aiming to reform their ways.

In this scenario, when Orchis launched an attack on the Hellfire Gala and fractured the X-Men, Jean Grey devised a strategy where Firestar would secretly align with Orchis against the X-Men as a double agent. However, there were just a few X-Men in the know about this scheme. The rest viewed Firestar as a betrayer. Despite her significant role in helping the X-Men and Iron Man defeat Orchis, it seems that Firestar has yet to regain the trust of the general public.

Firestar accepts Tony’s invitation to become part of the West Coast Avengers, but trouble awaits her in the second issue as her role as a mentor for reformed villains like Ultron and Blue Bolt proves challenging. The storyline reveals that Firestar is grappling with her own redemption after her undercover work with Orchis left emotional wounds and turned her into an outcast. Will the West Coast Avengers be able to help Firestar overcome her struggles and halt her descent?
