Doctor Who named one of top British TV exports as UK show sales hit record US high

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for time-traveling adventures, I must say the news of Doctor Who‘s success in the US market is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up, I remember waiting eagerly for each new episode, and now to see it breaking records and captivating audiences across the pond is a delight.

2023 was a fantastic year for British television exports, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! As a dedicated cinephile, it was heartening to see the sales of British shows to the US reach an all-time high. Among the standout performers was none other than Doctor Who – a series that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

In 2023, UK TV export revenues from US distributors increased by 13% to a record-breaking £593 million ($751 million), surpassing the £574 million earned in 2020, which was the first year of the pandemic.

In my humble opinion, I found a number of series that truly shone in the recent report. One of these was “Doctor Who,” which, being in its first year under BBC’s partnership with Disney Plus for production and distribution, certainly caught my eye. Additionally, there were gems like “Boat Story,” the anticipated “Planet Earth III,” and the ever-popular “Got Talent” franchise that left a lasting impression.

It was discovered in 2023-24 that while there was achievement in the U.S., overall export of British TV shows declined by a small percentage worldwide compared to the preceding year, amounting to a decrease of about 2%.

Last year, scripted dramas held a significant portion of the export market share at around 49%, but interestingly enough, it dropped slightly to approximately 43% this year. On the other hand, entertainment genre experienced a notable surge, jumping from 21% to 27%. As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to see what next year brings!

The agreement for Disney Plus to stream Doctor Who will carry on until 2025, as a second season of the program has already been filmed. In addition, a separate series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” has been developed as a spin-off.

It’s not completely certain if there will be a third season, as Disney hasn’t officially renewed the show under the new contract for season 16 yet. However, the showrunner, Russell T Davies, has reassured fans that there’s no need to worry.

This holiday season, Doctor Who is scheduled to return with its annual yuletide episode titled “Joy to the World.” The script for this special has been penned by Steven Moffat and features the acting talents of Nicola Coughlan as well as Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor.
