As a survivor of domestic abuse, I find myself deeply invested in Tom King‘s storyline on Emmerdale. The portrayal of his manipulative tactics and coercive control is chilling yet painfully realistic. It brings back memories of the emotional turmoil and fear that comes with being trapped in such a relationship.
This article contains discussion of domestic abuse, including coercive control, that some readers may find upsetting.
Contains spoilers for Friday’s Emmerdale episode (29th November 2024), currently available to stream on ITVX.
In the most recent episode of Emmerdale, James Chase, portrayed by Tom King, has sworn to clear his name amidst the severe accusations against him, even though it appears that he is indeed culpable.
This week, the abusive individual was apprehended as he attempted to embark on a foreign ferry. Remarkably, it was his former spouse, Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper), who played a crucial role in his arrest.
Following the events, Tom reached out to solicitor Ollie (Alistair Toovey), urgently asking for assistance because he felt he wasn’t secure in prison.
Simultaneously, Jimmy (Nick Miles), Nicola (Nicola Wheeler), along with their daughter Angelica King (Rebecca Bakes), surveyed some graffiti on their front door. The message, ‘Scum’, was directed at the villainous Tom.
In a casual, understandable manner: Charity Dingle (played by Emma Atkins) noticed something fishy about Amelia Spencer (portrayed by Daisy Campbell) and decided to question her directly.
In the spirit of honesty, I confessed my role in the matter at hand. To put it bluntly, I harbored resentment towards Jimmy because he initially supported Tom. This unwavering loyalty from Jimmy caused me to trust Tom as well, a decision I now regret.
Amelia was aided and assured by Charity that she would forever be included among the Dingle family, despite Amelia herself criticizing her actions.
Amelia intervened to clear away the graffiti, justifying her actions by mentioning that Ollie had reached out to add her name on Tom’s call list.
Belle advised Amelia to keep her distance, and Amelia promised she would do so, expressing regret over how she had behaved towards Belle.
Inside the correctional facility, Ollie conveyed to Tom that Amelia had been disregarding his phone calls. However, Tom instructed him to persist in making those attempts. It was crucial for Amelia to be present at the courtroom, ideally accompanied by her daughter Esther, as this would help portray Tom in the most innocent light possible.
Ollie tried to persuade Tom to plead guilty for a reduced sentence, but Tom refused, citing Belle’s mental health as a reason to paint her as a liar during his trial.
“She thinks the nightmare’s over. Well, it’s just begun,” declared Tom.
Will the jury see through Tom’s manipulative tactics?
