As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the treacherous landscapes of horror survival games, I can confidently say that Nightdive Studios’ decision to remove scripted infections for NPCs in The Thing: Remastered is a game-changer.
Next week at the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, Nightdive Studios’ remastered version of The Thing will unveil additional features. In a recent interview with Syfy Wire, Mark Atkinson, the original game’s director, disclosed a significant improvement: Instead of NPCs contracting the infection through scripted events, they will no longer do so.
In the game “The Thing“, non-player characters (NPCs) could get infected, causing them to transform into grotesque monsters. Yet, regardless of whether you guarded them during fights, they’d still transform due to predetermined infection sequences as part of the game’s script.
In the original games, players often criticized the sudden outbursts of non-playable characters (NPCs) who had not been infected before. In The Thing: Remastered, we’ve done away with these scripted burst-outs altogether and opted for a different approach. Some NPCs are now more susceptible to infection, and if they survive that, the trauma is so intense they become unstable and react in various distressing ways. This could result in them taking their own lives, suffering heart attacks, or even attacking other NPCs.
Josh Dowell, Nightdive’s software engineer, mentioned that “The infection system was present in the original game, but there were instances where squadmates would get infected and explode without any apparent reason, which players found frustrating. To address this issue, we have eliminated those occurrences, so now squad members can only become infected if they come into direct contact with a Thing beast.
Here’s some exciting updates about the remaster! It might substantially reshape the narrative’s direction. As for the release date, it’s only been confirmed as sometime this year, but there’s a possibility of an unexpected release on December 5th. Keep your eyes peeled until then!
The remastered version of “The Thing” will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. You can watch the initial gameplay trailer by clicking here.
