As a cinephile who has spent decades immersed in the world of theater and film, I find myself deeply moved by the experiences and sentiments expressed by Marissa Bode, the trailblazing actress who brings Nessarose to life in Wicked. Her courage and eloquence in addressing the issue of trolling and ableism towards her character is truly commendable.
In response to online trolling about the portrayal of Nessarose’s disability in Wicked, Marissa Bode, the actress playing Nessarose, has vocalized her opposition.
In a groundbreaking move, Bode became the initial individual using a wheelchair to portray the character of Nessarose. Although she acknowledges that some might find her character challenging, the actress has spoken up against offensive and inappropriate remarks made by certain individuals, labeling them as “extremely distasteful.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share some thoughts on a recent character I’ve encountered: Nessa. While many viewers seem to adore her, I must confess that my sentiments towards her are somewhat mixed – and that’s perfectly okay! We all have unique perspectives and interpretations when it comes to the characters we meet in our favorite stories.
She commented: “I believe Nessa is intricate, and that’s the charm of art. The film wouldn’t be as compelling if there weren’t varying perspectives on the characters, including who is truly wicked or not. It’s alright to dislike Nessa personally. After all, she’s a work of fiction, so it’s perfectly acceptable.
Bode openly stated that she finds light-hearted, playful, and non-harmful jests concerning Nessarose amusing, yet strongly disapproves of hostile remarks regarding Nessarose’s disability, expressing that such comments make her feel profoundly uneasy.
She stated, ‘Disabilities aren’t imaginary.’ After all, I, Marissa, am the one who lives with a disability and uses a wheelchair. It seems easy for many to dismiss or joke about, but it’s a sensitive issue.
In the musical, it’s worth noting that Nessarose, Elphaba’s younger sibling, experiences a significant change towards the darker side during its latter half, a development that many spectators are familiar with.
Bode further stated that jokes regarding Nessarose’s disability, labeled as “ableist,” seem more like laughter directed at instead of shared laughter with.

Representation is important but that’s not the only thing that will save the disabled community. I need a lot of y’all (non-disabled people) to do the work. To dissect and unlearn your own ableism. Listen to disabled people. Follow other disabled people outside of just me. Read up on the disability rights movement/watch the documentary Crip Camp! I understand no one likes feeling like they’re being scolded. But true progress never comes with comfort. And that’s ok. #wicked #nessa 💗💚

She added: “It’s more than just dismissing online remarks about me, Marissa. These remarks don’t operate in isolation. Harsh comments like those suggesting intent to harm Nessa and even wishing her disability upon her, are deeply offensive and harmful sentiments that many disabled individuals, including myself, have unfortunately encountered before.
Bode encourages everyone to consider the impact of their words on others, especially when they might cause emotional discomfort. He also suggests thinking about young wheelchair users who could potentially be affected negatively by such remarks.
She summarized: “In conclusion, I’d like to emphasize that one significant theme in Wicked revolves around the importance of listening and understanding each other. I sincerely encourage many of you to focus on this skill more often and carry it forward.
