As a fan who grew up with Morgan Lofting‘s iconic voice echoing through my childhood television, I am deeply saddened by her passing. Her portrayal of the Baroness in G.I. Joe was more than just a character to me; it was an integral part of my formative years.
84-year-old actress Morgan Lofting, renowned in voice-overs and famously known as Cobra’s chief intelligence officer the Baroness from the original G.I. Joe animated series, passed away on November 27th. The news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter, who stated that her death came unexpectedly.
Lofting’s representatives made a public announcement about her passing. They mentioned that she died in her Burbank, California home. They also expressed: “She was deeply cherished by us and our agency as one of the 10 original actors we represent.” Her representatives were Nery Lemus and Christopher Argasa from CelebWorx.
Apart from her notable works, Lofting is recognized for her contributions to the 1981 Spider-Man animated series, the original Transformers animated series, and the 1990 sci-fi action film Total Recall. In Spider-Man, she lent her voice to both Aunt May and Black Cat, while in Transformers she voiced Moonracer and Firestar. Her portrayal of the Baroness in G.I. Joe, however, remains her most remembered role, as she played this character across two miniseries, two movies, and 38 episodes of the main G.I. Joe TV series.
Born in Cincinnati in 1940, Lofting pursued acting roles in live-action films too, like the 1988 movie “The Night Before” alongside Keanu Reeves and Lori Loughlin. Amidst her Hollywood success, she completed her college education, achieving a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in history at Cal State Northridge. From 1996 to 2013, she took a break from voice-over work and found joy in working as a librarian, which she referred to as “bartending with books.
Lofting’s Legacy
At a convention in 2017, Lofting conversed with Bestow TV about her impact on the G.I. Joe series. She pondered, “After spending your earnings and returning home, you find yourself three decades later being introduced to someone’s spouse and children. They express how significant you were during their formative years. It dawns on you that these characters have been instrumental in shaping people’s lives.
Lofting proposed a unique European accent for the Baroness character, making her portrayal stand out. She remembered her fellow actor Mike Bell teasingly commenting that there was “blood on the control room window” following her emphatic exclamation of “COBRA!” during recording sessions. Almost two decades later, Loftis returned to acting in 2013 for her last performance as the villain Fistina in the animated series Ben 10: Omniverse.
