As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of Harry Potter since its debut, I must confess that the series, while enchanting and captivating, is not without its share of intricacies that leave one scratching their head. The plot holes are like the pesky Dementors lurking in the shadows, ready to sap the joy out of even the most dedicated fan’s experience.
For 17 years now, JK Rowling’s Harry Potter book series has been completed, and it’s been 13 years since the film adaptations wrapped up. In comparison to other significant intellectual properties like Star Wars and Marvel, Harry Potter hasn’t had much new content for quite some time. While many other IP have been heavily exploited, Warner Bros. and JK Rowling have shown a degree of patience with Harry Potter. However, it seems that Harry Potter is gradually making a resurgence. Last year, one of the most anticipated video game releases, Hogwarts Legacy, was unveiled and revitalized the franchise. Additionally, an upcoming HBO TV series aimed at rebooting the franchise appears to be contributing to this comeback.
Although Harry Potter may have been less prominent in recent years, the fanbase has remained strong. Notably, the Harry Potter subreddit is both widely used and bustling with activity. Currently, one of the most popular posts on there focuses on plot inconsistencies that drive fans up the wall.
It’s not surprising that some significant inconsistencies, often referred to as plot holes, are pointed out most frequently within the Harry Potter series.
What are plot holes of little details that just annoy the hell out of you?

The top comment mentions a clock in the Weasley household showing the children’s locations, with ‘dentist’ indicated for some of them. Later on, Professor Slughorn expresses great confusion when he learns that Hermione’s parents are actually dentists.
In a slightly different wording, the second most frequently mentioned comment highlights an inconsistency: During the first film, Dumbledore sent students to their dormitories due to the troll in the dungeons, yet it’s worth noting that the Slytherin dormitories are actually located within the dungeons.
In the movie “Prisoner of Azkaban,” Harry is depicted using magic (Lumos) to light his way instead of a regular torch. However, magic isn’t supposed to be used by underage wizards outside Hogwarts. That’s confusing!
In the fifth book of the series, it’s been noted as a potential inconsistency that Sirius didn’t remind Harry about the mirror he had given him during their Floo call, which was something not addressed in the books.
Amongst numerous debatable plot points found across the books and films, these are often the most contested ones, as indicated by their high vote counts and associated discussions. However, it’s important to note that this may not be universally agreed upon. What plot hole in any medium do you believe is the most problematic? As always, your thoughts are welcome!
