Bleach Finally Animates a Long-Awaited Bankai After Many Years

As a long-time fan who has followed Bleach since its early days, I must say that the animation of Captain Shunsui Kyoraku’s Bankai, Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju, in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has been nothing short of a thrill. The latest episode showcased the full extent of this powerful ability, and it was everything I had hoped for and more.

The long-awaited animated adaptation of “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War” is keeping its word by bringing Tite Kubo’s final arc from the manga to life, and the latest episode has finally shown Captain Shunsui Kyoraku’s Bankai in full for the first time. The series has been generating a lot of excitement among fans since it began airing Part 3 this Fall, as it delves into the genuine final battles between Soul Reapers and Quincies. This means new transformations, fights, and elements that were never shown during the original anime run.

The Third Part of “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War” – The Struggle surpasses expectations, not just by adhering to the manga’s content, but also by creating unique forms and battles. However, the most recent Bankai debut in the latest episode is a blend of both these aspects. In this episode, we finally see the full animation of Kyoraku’s Bankai, Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju, which fans have been eagerly anticipating. Yet, it also integrates elements from the anime that were initially non-canonical, making it a complete and unique debut.

At last, the secret art of Kyōraku Shunsui, the “Heart-shaped Flower in the Stone,” was unveiled.

Kyoraku Finally Unleashes His Bankai in Bleach: TYBW

Episode 35 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War carries on with the climactic battles between Soul Reapers and Quincies. Previously, Kurotsuchi engaged one of the Sternritters, unveiling his own freshly minted Bankai. This time around, it’s Kurotsuchi’s spiritual turbulence that catches Kyoraku’s eye. As he senses something amiss, Kyoraku shifts his focus to the distant Quincy who has been raining down attacks. The episode kicks off with Kyoraku intentionally receiving a shot right to his chest, leaving a gaping wound in its wake.

Later, it’s disclosed that this was merely a skill from his Shikai, which created a shadowy duplicate of his own body as part of the children’s game-like ability granted by his Zanpakuto. To counterbalance the formidable strength of his new Quincy adversary, Lillie Barro (who possesses the power to shoot through anything she perceives and phase through any attack that strikes her), Kyoraku chooses to unleash the full might of his Bankai, drawing the notice of everyone in the vicinity.

Kyoraku’s Bankai Makes the Jump to Canon

Katen Kyokotsu represents an exceptional instance in the chronicles of Bleach’s animated series. Unlike Kyoraku, whose Bankai has remained unrevealed until the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, the series offered a glimpse of its form prior to this event during the Alternate Tale arc. In this storyline unique to the anime, Zanpakuto spirits assumed their complete forms while battling against Soul Reapers. This was highly appreciated by fans as one of the most successful exclusive arcs in the series. Remarkably, the Alternate Tale arc was the initial occasion when viewers were introduced to Kyoraku’s Bankai.

In the very episode, his Zanpakuto offered solace during their imminent drowning, symbolizing its power to vanquish Lillie, as depicted in the anime’s early 2000s series. However, it was only now, with Kyoraku fully utilizing this ability, that we truly witness its capabilities for the first time. The question remains if it will be strong enough to overcome the Qunicies.
