Superman & Lois Almost Crossed Over With Batwoman (But Covid Got in the Way)

As a devoted fan of the Arrowverse, I must say that the journey has been nothing short of thrilling. The interconnectedness of these shows, the easter eggs, and the crossovers have always added an extra layer of excitement to each new season.

As the final episode of “Superman & Lois” airs on The CW this Monday, viewers have been reminiscing about not just this DC-inspired series, but also The CW’s larger franchise known as the Arrowverse. Although “Superman & Lois” is independent from the shared universe, it shares strong connections – its stars, Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, initially appeared as their characters on “Supergirl” and “The Flash.” In fact, there were plans for this spin-off to cross over with the main Arrowverse, but unfortunately, Covid-19 halted those plans.

At a panel during San Francisco Fan Expo (as reported by ScreenRant), Tulloch shared that the series had planned a crossover with Batwoman. However, when filming began, pandemic-related restrictions were too severe, transforming this potential collaboration into an intriguing “could have been” scenario.

Tulloch stated that filming commenced in October 2020, which meant stringent COVID-19 safety measures were enforced. There was some discussion about potentially merging the show with Batwoman, but ultimately, they decided against it.

The obstacles preventing a crossover between “Superman & Lois” and “Batwoman” weren’t just the Covid restrictions. Another challenge was that the two series were shot in different formats, causing unique problems. However, the abandoned “Batwoman” crossover wasn’t the only cross-universe collaboration under consideration. Additionally, there was a reference to “Supergirl” that was cut from the first episode of “Superman & Lois”. This included a photo of Melissa Benoist as “Supergirl” that was meant to be on Lois’ desk, but it ended up being removed from the final edit.

Tulloch mentioned that it was approximately during the time when talks were circulating about potentially excluding us from the Arrowverse directly,” (or) “According to Tulloch, this was around when there were discussions suggesting we might not be officially a part of the Arrowverse.

Superman & Lois Still Found Ways to Bring In Parts of the Arrowverse

In contrast to the planned Supergirl and Batwoman crossover that didn’t occur, the TV show Superman & Lois subtly paid tribute to its Arrowverse origins throughout its four seasons. By inviting actors who previously starred in the Arrowverse, the series incorporated them into its narrative without necessarily reprising their original roles. For instance, David Ramsey portrayed a different John Diggle, Jenna Dewan played a version of Lucy Lane, and Tom Cavanagh made an appearance in the final season not as Harrison Wells but as Gordon Godfrey instead.

Todd Helbing, the showrunner, stated to ComicBook that while brainstorming potential comparisons for this character’s personality, it seemed as if we were describing someone Tom Hanks could effortlessly portray with his exceptional eye-catching performances, impeccable comic timing, and overall vibrant energy. It simply felt like a flawless fit.

Superman & Lois airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. The series finale airs Monday, December 2nd.
