As a seasoned Doctor Who enthusiast who has journeyed through countless time-space adventures, I must admit that this year’s Christmas special, Joy to the World, piques my curiosity. The Doctor being companionless is a departure from the usual, and it’s intriguing to see how the narrative unfolds without the familiar presence of a traveling companion.
In this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, the Doctor will be without companions, instead finding himself quite isolated – a departure from the usual portrayal of Doctors we’ve witnessed in the past.
In the role of your friendly neighborhood movie critic, I must say that viewers were left hanging in season 14, as Ncuti Gatwa’s character, the Doctor, found himself alone at the conclusion. Meanwhile, Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, reconnected with her long-absent mother and bid farewell to her thrilling escapades alongside the Doctor.
This upcoming Christmas, the Doctor will find himself alone, and showrunner Steven Moffat has clarified the reason behind it.
In a new interview with SFX magazine, Moffat explained: “The show isn’t really about the Doctor.
Doctor Who’s story isn’t just about who he encounters; it doesn’t start with him stealing the TARDIS and fleeing. Instead, it commences when Susan’s school teachers follow her home and stumble upon him.
In the solitary setting of “Joy to the World,” viewers will catch a peek into the Doctor’s daily routines as he explores and tinkers within the TARDIS all by himself.
In this particular instance, Moffat explained to the press about the inner workings of the mysterious character when there’s no one for him to act as ‘The Doctor.’
However, the Doctor won’t face this predicament entirely alone. Instead, he encounters Joy (Nicola Coughlan), a solitary hotel resident who seems to be linked to a secretive suitcase of enigma.
When the Doctor is off on his own, there’ll still be lots of laughter to enjoy, as Moffat has promised fans that this special won’t be as frightening as his notorious Blink episode.
He explained to SFX magazine that it carries a touch of holiday charm, which suggests it tends towards the humorously playful side, somewhat.
