As a gamer with a keen eye for gaming history, I have to say that the release of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been nothing short of remarkable amidst the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine. It’s almost as if this game was born from the very ashes of Chernobyl itself, and yet it continues to defy the odds.
The release of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl might have had more problems than anticipated by the developers, but it’s nearly incredible that it was able to come out given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Now, Russian media outlets are attempting to disseminate a baseless allegation that Stalker 2 secretly enlists players to join the Ukrainian military and combat the Russian invasion.
404 Media initially shared the news: A video circulating on Telegram is being propagated with misleading assertions, suggesting it stemmed from a Wired report. Additionally, emails have been dispatched to journalists alleging that Ukrainian gaming company GSC Game World is assisting the Ukrainian government in identifying citizens for mobilization by means of a hidden system that accumulates player details and locations. The emails further claim that Ukraine financed Stalker 2’s development in order to receive this data in return.
PC Gamer notes that the video subtly advises Stalker 2 enthusiasts to utilize a VPN to dodge alleged data collection, hinting at the main focus of this propaganda not being Western or Ukrainian gamers, but instead Russian fans. The Stalker series had already gained popularity in Russia prior to the invasion and continues to do so currently. This video seems to aim at deterring Russian players from interacting with the game or anything else that presents Ukraine in a favorable manner.
The documentary titled “War Game: The Making of Stalker 2” showcases how the Russian invasion impacted the creation process of the game. Majority of GSC Game World’s team were forced to leave their homeland to complete the project, while some stayed behind to participate in actual warfare. Upon release, a day-one patch was issued to tackle some ongoing issues with Stalker 2, and GSC Game World continues its efforts to rectify any remaining bugs. To date, Stalker 2 has surpassed 1 million sales on both PC and Xbox platforms, and it’s also accessible through Game Pass.
