As I delve into the intricate and often tumultuous lives of the Mathers family, it’s impossible not to be moved by the strength and resilience that each member has shown. Marshall Mathers, or Eminem as he is popularly known, has had a remarkable journey from his humble beginnings in Detroit to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated rappers. His life story is a testament to the power of determination and the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.
Eminem‘s family is mourning the loss of a loved one.
The mother of the rapper known as “Without Me,” Debbie Nelson, passed away at the age of 69 after a long fight with advanced lung cancer. This sad news was confirmed by his representative to People magazine on December 3. It is nearly three months since various media outlets reported that she was suffering from a terminal illness.
TopMob News has reached out to Eminem’s reps for comment and has not heard back.
In 1955, Nelson was born on a military base in Kansas. At the age of 15, she tied the knot with Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., as detailed in her 2008 memoir titled “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”. Sixteen months later, she gave birth to Eminem (whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III). They subsequently moved to Michigan, where Nelson’s grandmother resided.
In the initial stages of my professional journey, I openly criticized my mom for her abusive behavior towards me. I highlighted the tumultuous nature of our bond in various tracks, such as “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” expressing the deep-seated issues that existed between us.
In his 2002 hit song, he rapped, “I would never insult my own mother for fame,” but give it a moment before you assume this track is being disrespectful. Listen carefully, as this recording may not be what it seems at first glance. If you can imagine yourself in my shoes, try to understand the situation I’m describing. You see my mom struggling with prescription drugs in the kitchen.
However, Nelson has spoken out against her son’s lyrics, denying his accusations.
In her autobiography, she expressed displeasure at being labeled as a woman dependent on pills and alcohol, living off welfare. However, she admitted that what she had written wasn’t accurate, and the lies grew larger over time, eventually leading to Marshall and her growing apart.
Later on, the Grammy winner revealed that his viewpoint regarding their relationship evolved with the passing of time, mentioning that his perspective shifted significantly as he matured.
During an interview on BET’s 106 & Park in 2009, he expressed that one of his realizations was, ‘At the heart of it all, she is my mother and I hold her dear because she is my mom.’ Although we don’t communicate much, he acknowledged that she is still his mother. He added that he has developed a deeper empathy for her, understanding her struggles now that he sees himself and how he evolved. This newfound understanding, he suggested, has ignited a sense of compassion within him.
However, he acknowledged that they hadn’t spoken for quite some time, specifying that their last conversation was likely around three or four years ago.
Additionally, he conveyed remorse for disclosing his personal family issues by revealing a rift in his life through his 2013 track titled “Headlights”.
He plunged in without a second thought about the potential harm his words might cause, particularly to his mother. Although he admits that she likely bore the brunt of it, he wonders if he went too far, given our family’s stubborn nature. Yet, he emphasizes, he doesn’t hold any resentment towards her. In fact, he still views her as beautiful because she is his mother.

Read on for a more in-depth look at Eminem’s family tree.
Kimberly Ann Scott, hailing from Michigan, was once Eminem’s high school girlfriend. In 1995, she gave birth to their daughter named Hailie Jade.
Kim was married to the rapper from 1999 until 2001, and they briefly reunited in 2006. Their stormy relationship has been mentioned in various songs by Eminem, such as “’97 Bonnie & Clyde,” “Vomit” and “Bad Spouse.
Kim observed in a 2007 interview with 20/20, “Our relationship follows a certain pattern: two good years followed by trouble for some reason. It seems like we can only last for about two years together, and we hadn’t even reached the two-year mark yet. I didn’t want to hastily commit before we hit that two-year milestone.
However, Kim noted that Eminem has always been an “excellent” father.
“He loves the kids very much,” she shared. “He’s always lending a helping hand.”
On Christmas Day, 1995, Eminem and Kim gave birth to their daughter, Hailie. The musician has shared that this event served as a significant motivation for him to focus and improve his life.
In an interview with Q Magazine back in 2001, I shared that every action I’m taking today is centered around Hailie. The funds, you see, are being set aside for her future education and college expenses.
She spent the majority of her teenage years residing under the expansive roof of Eminem’s 15,000-square-foot home in the Detroit suburbs. Later on, she enrolled at Michigan State University to study psychology. It was there that she encountered her current spouse, Evan McClintock. They got married in May 2024, having become engaged a year earlier.
Eminem expressed his satisfaction during an episode of Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson in 2020, stating that Hailie, now known as Hailie Jade the influencer, graduated from college with a remarkable 3.9 GPA. He went on to say that she has certainly made him feel proud.
In October 2024, Hailie announced her pregnancy with her and Evan’s first child, a baby boy.
Born on Feb. 22, 1993, Alaina is the daughter of Kim’s sister Dawn Scott.
In the early 2000s, Eminem took custody of his niece due to his mother’s battles with substance abuse. As he stated in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2004, “I have full custody of my niece and joint custody of Hailie.” Ever since she was born, I’ve been a significant part of her life, and my niece has lived with us wherever we were located, along with Kim.
Growing up predominantly under Eminem’s care, the Oakland University graduate often refers to him as her father. He was honored to walk her down the aisle as she married Matt Moeller in June 2023.
In the aftermath of the beautiful wedding ceremony where I had the honor to serve as the Maid of Honor, I shared with People magazine, “I wouldn’t have been able to experience this extraordinary moment without my father by my side. I feel incredibly fortunate.
Her mother passed away in 2016 at the age of 41.
Back in 2002, April 16 to be exact, I was ecstatically thrilled to meet Stevie for the first time, accompanied by my then-boyfriend, Eric Hartter. Fast forward to 2005, when Eminem officially made Stevie a part of our family after rekindling his relationship with Kim.
In August 2021, Stevie publicly identified themselves as nonbinary, expressing in a TikTok post that they are comfortable with any set of pronouns being used to refer to them.
They added in the caption, “forever growing and changing.”
Born in 1955 at a military base in Kansas, Debbie is the mother of Eminem.
In her 2008 memoir “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”, she shared that she got married to the father of the artist known as “Without Me” (Eminem), who was then Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., when she was just 15 years old. Seventeen months later, she conceived Eminem and subsequently moved to Michigan, a place where her maternal grandmother resided.
The challenging connection between Debbie and Eminem has been highlighted in numerous songs of his, such as the 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” In this song, he claimed that Debbie misused prescription drugs during his childhood, a charge she refuted in her autobiography.
She wrote, “What mother would want to be labeled as a drug-taking, heavy drinker reliant on government aid?” Yet, none of this was accurate, however, the lies grew larger, eventually leading to our estrangement, she explained. (Marshall and I)
Yet, Eminem later admitted feeling remorseful for exposing his personal family matters. In his 2013 song “Headlights,” he rapped, “I dived headfirst without considering who or what my words might wound / Most likely my mother endured the most pain from the lines I spouted.
Nelson died at the age of 69 in 2024 following a battle with cancer.
