What you need to know
- FromSoftware is the legendary arthouse behind Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Sekiro, Armored Core, and various other successful Xbox and Windows PC games.
- In a new interview, FromSoftware lead Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed a variety of topics, including what’s next for the developer.
- It sounds as though we’re not getting a follow up to Elden Ring any time soon, but there’s a “variety” of other games in multiple genres in development.
As a tech enthusiast with a penchant for all things gaming, I must confess that FromSoftware has been my go-to developer when it comes to immersive and challenging games. The studio’s masterful creations have been the soundtrack of countless sleepless nights as I grappled with their intricate mechanics and engrossing narratives.
Few game development studios enjoy as much acclaim and affection as FromSoftware today. The creators of Elden Ring are among the most honored of recent years, extending a streak of success that has lasted for nearly decades. Their games like Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls have shaped an entire genre, inspiring numerous tributes and imitations, and culminating in the magnificent Elden Ring, which brought this genre into the mainstream audience with its exceptional craftsmanship.
Numerous enthusiasts are thrilled about potential future projects from the studio, having recently seen success with the Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, and Armored Core VI. The Elden Ring game continues to receive exceptional ratings on Xbox and Windows PCs, and there’s a possibility that it could become the first downloadable content (DLC) to win “Game of the Year” at the 2025 Game Awards following rule adjustments specifically for this title.
Instead of immediately producing a sequel, as one might anticipate from many studios due to Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree’s success, studio head Hidetaka Miyazaki has different ideas in mind.
In an engaging chat with Game Watch (courtesy of the amazing @Okami13_), I, as a tech enthusiast, had the pleasure of delving into Miyazaki’s thoughts on various subjects, skillfully translated by Microsoft Copilot from Japanese. Miyazaki emphasized that scaling up Shadow of the Erdtree was crucial to preserve Elden Ring’s adventurous spirit while also unearthing hidden elements for us to discover. Despite acknowledging that this journey taught us valuable lessons that will undeniably shape our future projects.
For now, there aren’t any plans for Elden Ring 2. But rest assured, we haven’t ruled out further development within the Elden Ring intellectual property.
Miyazaki clarified that FromSoftware is currently engaged in numerous projects spanning different genres. He mentioned that not every upcoming project will be personally overseen by him. For instance, Armored Core VI was helmed by Masaru Yamamura. In a past conversation, Miyazaki expressed a desire to play a more significant role in elevating the franchise to new heights.
Bloodborne 2? Sekiro 2? Armored Core 7?! NINJA BLADE 2?!
The sky is well and truly the limit for FromSoftware at this point potentially.
In PlayStation’s 30th anniversary teaser, the company hinted at Bloodborne, displaying a quick look with the word “persistence” prominently displayed, offering long-awaiting fans a glimmer of hope that they might eventually get a sequel or remaster of the gothic game from 2015. With Elden Ring’s success under their belt, FromSoftware certainly has many possibilities to explore in terms of future projects.
Despite being on hiatus for a while, the Dark Souls series continues to hold significant clout. The Armored Core series has potential to evolve and reach new heights. As for FromSoftware’s 2009 Xbox exclusive Ninja Blade, let’s just say it could use a bit of polishing.
As a researcher in the gaming field, I can’t help but admire the extraordinary creativity and ingenuity displayed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team at FromSoftware. Regardless of whether they’re working on a sequel, reboot, remake, or an entirely fresh concept, I have unwavering faith that their work will once again prove to be a resounding success for this esteemed developer.
