Over time, Marshall Mathers III, more commonly known as Eminem, has expressed his complex bond with his mom through his songs.

In the 1999 track “My Name Is” from The Slim Shady LP, Eminem reminisced about telling his mother that he would one day become a renowned rapper, create an album centered around drug experiences, and name it after her.

Based on ABC News reports, Debbie took legal action against Eminem for defamation that same year and was awarded a $25,000 settlement (much of which went towards her attorney’s fees). In response, she voiced her rebuttal in the 2001 track “Dear Marshall” on ID-X’s album titled “Set the Record Straight”.

In an interview with Inside Edition in 2001, Debbie expressed that she found it painful to say this, but admitted that her son’s music was not causing issues related to pill-popping or negligence, as some had claimed. She added, “I certainly don’t deserve such accusations.

Yet, the conflict didn’t stop there. In 2002, Eminem released “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” a song where he invited listeners to imagine seeing his mother taking prescription pills in the kitchen. He also described the strained relationship between his mother and his daughter, Hailie Jade, in this song.

The artist rapped, “Look at Hailie now, she’s grown so much and is stunningly beautiful, but you won’t have the chance to see her as she’ll not be present at your funeral. What pains me deeply is that you refuse to acknowledge your mistakes. Woman, keep singing your song, persistently believing that you were a mother. Yet, how audacious of you to claim what you didn’t contribute to obtaining. You selfish woman, may you suffer the consequences and endure torment in the afterlife for this.

In the year 2009, I found myself moved by Eminem’s song “My Mom,” where he poured out his feelings about Debbie’s rumored substance abuse issues and its impact on his personal struggle with addiction. Notably, he marked 16 years of sobriety in April that same year.

He stated, on the record, that his mother was fond of Valium and various other medications. As a result, he explained, I’ve turned out the way I have because I resemble her in this aspect.

Despite the lyrics, Eminem later noted his mom still had a place in his heart.

Despite the fact that we don’t communicate verbally, she is my mother and I love her deeply. My feelings for her have grown over time as I’ve come to grasp more about her experiences and emotions. This quote was shared in a 2011 BET interview.

Then in 2013, Eminem dropped his track “Headlights” in which he apologized to his mom.

He expressed on the track that they’ve been estranged for a long time, and he dislikes this situation. He also apologized to his mother for the song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” admitting that at the time he was angry, but he didn’t intend it to cause so much harm. Now, he understands that it wasn’t her fault, and he no longer performs that song in concerts or listens to it on the radio because it makes him uncomfortable whenever it comes up.

In 2022, when Eminem was honored at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, his mother extended a heartfelt message towards him and Hailie.

In a video posted by The Shadyverse on social media, she expressed her congratulations to Marshall for his induction into the Hall of Fame, adding that she holds him dear, had faith he would achieve this milestone, and mentioned that the journey has been quite lengthy.

In the early 2000s, Eminem took guardianship of his niece because of her mother’s battles with substance abuse. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2004, the “8 Mile” star explained, “I have full custody of my niece and joint custody of Hailie. I’ve always been present in Hailie’s life, and my niece has been a part of mine since her birth. Essentially, Kim and I raised her wherever we were living.

Growing up primarily under the care of Eminem, the Oakland University graduate refers to him as her father and requested his presence by her side during her wedding to Matt Moeller in June 2023.

She shared with People following the wedding ceremony, where she was a Maid of Honor, that “he wouldn’t have let that pass,” expressing her gratitude. “Everything about this event wouldn’t have transpired without my father. I am deeply grateful,” she added.

Her mother passed away in 2016 at the age of 41.
