As a longtime Donkey Kong enthusiast who grew up with these games, I must admit, I can’t help but feel a tinge of envy towards my Japanese counterparts. The Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Land III is undeniably more vibrant and visually appealing than the one we North American players have been stuck with. It’s like watching a black-and-white movie when everyone else has color TVs!
Over the past few weeks, the Donkey Kong Land trilogy has gradually been incorporated into Nintendo Switch Online. Now, the series is complete as Donkey Kong Land III has been made accessible on the Game Boy app. However, North American users have missed out on the better version of the game. In Japan, subscribers received the Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Land III, but players in North America only got the original Game Boy version, which lacks the vibrant colors that were included in the Japanese release.
The reason for this decision might be because the Game Boy Color (GBC) edition of Donkey Kong Land III was exclusively released in Japan, while it came out in North America and Europe in 1997. By the time it finally reached Japan in 2000, the Game Boy Color had already been on the market for a while, leading to the release of a colorized version instead. Interestingly, Nintendo has often included Japanese games in their Nintendo Switch Online service, but for some reason, they have yet to add the GBC edition of Donkey Kong Land III. This isn’t the first time such an inconsistency has occurred; when Donkey Kong Land III was added to the 3DS Virtual Console, North American and European users received the Game Boy (GB) version, while Japanese users got the GBC one.
In essence, although the underlying gameplay remains unchanged, the visual distinction between old and new versions of Donkey Kong Land III, particularly the one for Nintendo Switch in Japan, is quite significant. It’s tough not to feel a hint of envy when you see those colors! The Game Boy Color version certainly stands out, and it’ll be intriguing to discover if it ever makes its way to North America. However, even though we missed out on the best version, Donkey Kong Land III is still worth taking a look at. Developer Rare did an admirable job incorporating many elements from the Super Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country games, while also introducing changes that set these titles apart. The original Donkey Kong Land offers the most distinct experience among the trilogy, but all three games are a blast and definitely worth exploring for fans of Donkey Kong.
It appears that the Donkey Kong Land series has been introduced on Nintendo Switch Online as a strategy to generate excitement for the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Whether Nintendo will continue to introduce additional Donkey Kong titles remains uncertain, but there are still some notable absences in their online service. For instance, the Game Boy app could potentially include Donkey Kong ’94, and the remake of the original Donkey Kong Country for Game Boy Color, which did see a North American release. On the N64 platform, we might also expect to see both Donkey Kong 64 and Diddy Kong Racing. Here’s hoping that more Donkey Kong games will be released in the future!
