As a die-hard fan of the Stalker series, I’ve been through the Zone more times than I can count, and the anticipation for Stalker 2 has been a rollercoaster ride. The A-Life system was a significant part of what made the original game so immersive, and its absence or diminished state in the sequel has left many of us feeling like we’ve stumbled into a mutated, lifeless version of the Zone.
The developers of Stalker 2’s game world, under the GSC banner, acknowledged that they reduced the effectiveness of the A-Life 2.0 simulation system in the game, primarily because of technical issues related to performance.
In the initial version of Stalker, the A-Life system controlled nearly all aspects of the game’s virtual environment. This system played a crucial role in determining the actions of non-player characters (NPCs) and creatures within the Zone, allowing the game world to continue functioning even when the player was not present.
In the upcoming sequel, A-Life 2.0 was described as a mechanism to make gameplay appear more spontaneous and dynamic. However, eager gamers were taken aback when any reference to this system mysteriously disappeared from Stalker 2’s Steam page prior to its release.
After being released, the surprise grew even greater as more people came to believe that A-Life was either absent or greatly reduced in presence. It’s been acknowledged by developers that there has been a problem with its functioning, though the full scope of the issue is only now becoming apparent.
Stalker 2 dev explains A-Life 2.0’s shortcomings
In an interview with IGN, the CEO and Creative Director of GSC Game World, Ievgen Grygorovych Maria Grygorovych, explained the issues that arose during the development process of the updated version of A-Life.
Ievgen pointed out that the main problem lies with performance issues. He mentioned that due to optimization needs on both PC and console platforms, they needed to decrease the area where A-Life 2.0 affects the player.
An optimally performing AI (Artificial Intelligence) needs to influence a broader spectrum of the digital universe, simultaneously demanding greater memory reserves. In our endeavor to enhance efficiency, we’ve found that Google Stadia Cloud Streaming (GSC) has been trimming aspects from various angles, which unfortunately introduced bugs during the game development process.
Despite the developer’s assurance that the team is diligently enhancing Stalker 2’s performance to expand the capabilities of A-Life 2.0, Ievgen stated, “We are currently focusing on optimizing the system to provide more resources for the A-Life system, which will increase the area where A-Life can be seen.
From my perspective as an enthusiast, Maria shared that the sudden absence of A-Life from Steam’s description was due to a marketing team member informing them that many players remained unaware of the game’s distinctive feature, hence the need for a change in presentation.
In an effort to streamline details on their store page, marketing omitted specifics about A-Life 2.0 without first gaining consent from GSC. It was only through Reddit that Maria discovered the missing information. IGN reported that she presented screenshots of internal correspondence as evidence to substantiate her assertions.
The mention of this particular game feature won’t reappear on Steam until it’s been corrected within the game itself. At the moment, we don’t have a specific timeframe for when players might see this update.
