As I delve into the intricate tapestry of Eminem’s life, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by the complexity and resilience that define his journey. Born to Debbie, a teenager herself when she gave birth to him, Eminem’s early years were marked by strife and struggle. His relationship with his mother, while troubled, has been a significant influence on his music, shaping some of his most poignant and powerful lyrics.
Nathan Mathers isn’t mincing his words.
In my own words, as a devoted follower, I’m expressing my personal response to the sad news about the demise of Eminem’s younger brother, Marshall Bruce Mathers III’s mother, Debbie Nelson. She passed away on December 2nd at the age of 69 after a long struggle with lung cancer.
On a dark background, Nate (also known as Nathan) simply wrote on his December 3 Instagram story, “A mix of hatred and feelings today.
I, as a dedicated follower, was following the career of Nate, a rising music producer, back when Eminem, who is now famously known as Marshall Mathers Jr.’s son, was just turning 13 years old. My significant other at that time was Fred Samra.
Throughout various stages of his life, Eminem has openly discussed his challenging childhood experiences, such as being deserted by his father in infancy, and his persistent attempts to secure guardianship for his brother when he entered foster care at eight years old.
In an interview with Rolling Stone back in 2004, the rapper expressed that since he was taken away, he had always vowed if he ever had the chance, he would bring him back. He attempted to apply for full custody when he turned 20, but at that time, he lacked the necessary resources.
He went on to say, “Seeing him at the foster home made me cry. It was only me who could visit him when they took him away. They took him out of school unexpectedly. He didn’t understand what was happening, and it was a repetition of what had happened in my own life.
Eventually, Eminem became the legal guardian of his brother when he was 16 years old. At the age of around 29, the Grammy winner, speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, stated, “I thought, ‘If I can get myself into a good place, I’ll put an end to all this chaos.’ And that’s exactly what I did.
According to her 2007 biography, “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”, she expressed that no mother would want to be labeled as a drug-addicted, alcoholic who survives on government assistance. However, the lies were exaggerated over time, and ultimately, Marshall and I drifted apart.
As he’s grown older, Eminem has often shared that his view of his mom has evolved over time.
During an interview on BET’s 106 & Park in 2009, he expressed his feelings by saying, ‘In the end, she is my mom, and I love her for being my mother.’ Even though we don’t communicate much, she remains my mother. I do love her, and I believe I have gained a deeper understanding of her struggles or current situations, now that I see myself and how I turned out. This newfound comprehension has brought about a sense of compassion towards her.’
Regarding him, it’s worth mentioning that Nate, who has three children – daughter Audrianna, and sons Liam and Carter, together with his spouse Ashley Mae Mathers – has consistently expressed his affection for his brother openly throughout the years.
On her podcast “Just a Little Shady” in February 2023, he shared with his niece Hailie Jade, “Eminem was an exceptional role model for me. He’s been instrumental in helping me become the father I am today.

During a challenging period in his life when his relationship with his mother was tense, Eminem worked diligently to assume the role of Nate’s legal guardian, as she had given birth to him at just sixteen years old.
The artist behind “Till I Collapse” has openly claimed that his mother was abusive throughout the years, with references to this in his 2002 song titled “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.
In his song, he raps, “I would never insult my own mother for some recognition,” he clarifies. “Give it a moment’s thought before you assume this track is criticizing. But imagine if you were in my shoes, can you visualize? You see, your mother struggling with prescriptions in the kitchen.
As for Debbie, she refuted his claims and, interestingly enough, filed a lawsuit against her son in 1999 for a staggering sum of $11 million due to his song “My Name Is.” However, as reported by the BBC, this legal dispute was eventually resolved out of court with Debbie receiving $25,000.
In her 2007 biography titled “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”, she expressed that no mother desires to be labeled as a drug-addicted, alcoholic individual living off government aid. Unfortunately, the lies she told about herself grew larger over time, and eventually, they led to a rift between her and her son, Marshall.
As Eminem matured, his viewpoint towards his mother evolved over time.
During his 2009 interview on BET’s 106 & Park, he expressed, “Ultimately, she is my mom, and I hold deep affection for her. Our conversations might not be frequent, but she remains my mother. Over time, I’ve developed more empathy for her, as I can now see myself in her experiences. I believe this understanding has fostered a sense of compassion within me.
Regarding this matter, it’s worth noting that Nate, who has three children – a daughter named Audrianna and sons Liam and Carter, together with his wife Ashley Mae Mathers – has openly expressed his affection for his brother on numerous occasions over time.
He expressed to Hailie Jade on her podcast “Just a Little Shady” in February 2023 that Eminem was the ideal role model he could have had. Furthermore, he mentioned that Eminem’s influence played a significant part in helping him become the father he is today.

Kimberly Ann Scott, a native of Michigan, was Eminem’s girlfriend during his high school years. In 1995, they became parents to Hailie Jade.
Kim was married to the rapper between 1999 and 2001, and for a short time in 2006 as well. Their stormy union has been mentioned in various songs by Eminem, such as “’97 Bonnie & Clyde,” “Puke” and “Bad Husband.
Kim stated in a 2007 interview with 20/20 that their relationship has a recurring pattern: they enjoy two good years, but then encounter issues for some reason. It seems that their relationship lasts at most two years, and they had not yet reached this duration. She didn’t want to hasten things before the two-year mark.
However, Kim noted that Eminem has always been an “excellent” father.
“He loves the kids very much,” she shared. “He’s always lending a helping hand.”
On Christmas Day, 1995, rapper Eminem and his partner Kim gave birth to their daughter Hailie. As the renowned musician put it, her arrival served as a powerful motivation for him to shape up and focus on his life.
I shared with Q magazine back in 2001 that every action I take currently revolves around Hailie. The resources, they are all earmarked for her higher education.
For a significant portion of her adolescent years, she resided under the expansive 15,000-square-foot roof of Eminem’s home in Detroit’s suburbs. Later, she pursued a degree in psychology at Michigan State University. It was during this time that she encountered her current spouse, Evan McClintock. They tied the knot in May 2024, having become engaged the year before.
Eminem praised Hailie during an episode of Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson in 2020, noting that she excelled academically and earned a 3.9 GPA while graduating from college. He was undoubtedly proud of her achievements.
In October 2024, Hailie announced her pregnancy with her and Evan’s first child, a baby boy.
Born on Feb. 22, 1993, Alaina is the daughter of Kim’s sister Dawn Scott.
In the early 2000s, Eminem took custody of his niece due to his sister’s battles with substance abuse. “I have full custody of my niece Hailie and joint custody with Kim,” the star of 8 Mile explained to Rolling Stone in 2004. “Hailie has always been a part of my life, and my niece has lived with us wherever we were.
Growing up primarily under Eminem’s care, the Oakland University graduate refers to him as her father and chose to have him walk her down the aisle during her wedding to Matt Moeller in June 2023.
She shared with People following the wedding ceremony where she was the Maid of Honor, “She wasn’t going to let that pass,” expressing her gratitude. “Everything that transpired wouldn’t have happened without my father. I feel incredibly fortunate.
Her mother passed away in 2016 at the age of 41.
On April 16, 2002, Kim warmly greeted Stevie, who was then dating Eric Hartter. However, in 2005, Eminem officially adopted Stevie following his reunion with Kim.
In August 2021, Stevie announced publicly that they are nonbinary and prefer using all available pronouns. This information was shared via a TikTok video.
They added in the caption, “forever growing and changing.”
Born in 1955 at a military base in Kansas, Debbie is the mother of Eminem.
In her 2008 memoir titled “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem”, she revealed that she got married to the father of the artist known as “Without Me”, which is Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., when she was only 15 years old. Sixteen months later, she conceived Eminem and subsequently moved to Michigan, a place where her maternal grandmother resided.
The troubled relationship between Debbie and Eminem has been expressed in numerous songs of his, such as the 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” In this song, he accused Debbie of abusing prescription drugs during his childhood, an allegation she refuted in her autobiography.
As a wellness advocate, I can’t help but express my dismay at the misconception that I might be a woman reliant on medication, alcohol, and government aid. Such a label is far from the truth, yet unfortunately, it seems the tales spun around me have grown larger than life. Over time, these exaggerations led to a painful estrangement between myself and Marshall.
Nonetheless, Eminem has since shown remorse for exposing his family matters. In his 2013 song “Headlights,” he rapped, “I plunged in headfirst, not considering who or what I might have harmed / In this verse, my mother likely took the brunt of it.
Nelson died at the age of 69 in 2024 following a battle with cancer.
