As a gamer who grew up with the magical world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the day when I could immerse myself in a new, captivating game set within its universe. It feels like a cruel twist of fate that the much-anticipated fighting game, which was supposed to bring us back to the world of Aang, Korra, and Sokka, has been canceled.
Despite the world yearning for an Avatar: The Last Airbender game at its peak, it mysteriously disappeared. Fans have been eagerly waiting for updates on future Avatar games for quite some time now, but unfortunately, they’ll have to endure even more waiting. As per Maximum Entertainment’s Q3 2024 financial report, an Avatar: The Last Airbender game was among the three projects they decided to shelve. While it appears that the cancelled title might be the fighting game unveiled in February, the developer failed to provide a definitive confirmation. Conversely, Saber Interactive’s Avatar game, characterized as an AAA RPG, seems to still be under active development.
In collaboration with Paramount Studios, Maximum Entertainment’s version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is being marketed as a multiplayer fighting game within the world of the original series. While no specific platforms have been confirmed for release, it was announced that an early access version will be launched in 2025. However, Maximum Entertainment did not reveal who the developer of the game would be, making it uncertain how far along the project was before its cancellation.
Back in 2005, the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” hit our screens, introducing us to Avatar Aang, the last survivor of the Airbenders. Alongside his companions Korra and Sokka, he embarked on a mission to save the world by vanquishing Fire Lord Ozai and ending the century-long conflict with the Fire Nation, known as the Hundred Year War. The series’ popularity and market success resulted in two more seasons, a spin-off titled “The Legend of Korra,” and a live-action adaptation that premiered on Netflix last year.
During its initial airing, the transition of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender to video games was a commercial hit, with popular titles such as 2006’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burned Earth in 2007, and both Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno and Avatar: Legends of the Arena in 2008. More recently, the franchise has experienced some resurgence with the mobile game Avatar: Generations in 2022 and Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance last year.
Similar to how the first episode of a show provides a chance for continuation, there’s only one opportunity left to ensure that the Avatar universe doesn’t miss out on another video game. In October, Paramount Game Studios, Avatar Studios, and Saber Interactive declared a high-end action-RPG game set in the Avatar Legends universe. They labeled it “the largest video game in the franchise” and placed players in the past as a brand new character from the Avatar lineage. For enthusiasts who yearn for the original animated series’ cast, they can engage in the crossover fighting game Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, where they can play as Aang, Azula, Prince Zuko, and Korra.
Beyond the realm of gaming, Avatar Studios unveiled in April that Paramount is planning an animated film called “Aang: The Last Airbender” due to hit cinemas on January 30, 2026. Meanwhile, Netflix has given a green light for two additional seasons of the live-action series “Avatar: The Last Airbender“.
