Nosferatu: Release date, cast and trailer for Robert Eggers remake

As a film enthusiast who’s spent countless nights huddled in the dark, engrossed by the silver screen’s eerie glow, I can confidently say that Nosferatu is a cinematic gem that has withstood the test of time and adaptation. Having delved into the world of vampires more times than I care to count, I can attest that FW Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece remains unparalleled in its chilling impact and enduring influence on horror cinema.

Some narratives possess such a strong visual appeal that they’ve been adapted for the silver screen numerous times, and the story of Dracula is definitely among the greatest examples of these.

In a different phrase, Bram Stoker’s famous 1897 horror novel of the gothic genre has been remade over thirty times, but it might not have been as effectively captured as in FW Murnau’s renowned 1922 silent movie titled Nosferatu.

When initially unveiled, the movie sparked much controversy and even led to a legal dispute with the Stoker estate due to allegations of copyright violation. However, over time, it has gained recognition as a groundbreaking horror film that has influenced numerous subsequent productions in the genre.

Currently, it functions as a primary influence for filmmaker Robert Eggers‘ upcoming movie titled “Nosferatu”, a spin-off and expansion of F.W. Murnau’s original work, with intriguing modifications incorporated into the narrative.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say that early responses to this film are nothing short of remarkable! Our own four-star review hails it as a chilling yet captivating reinterpretation of the vampire lore, and they didn’t hold back on their praise, calling it an absolute work of art. The performances by Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård in particular have truly stolen the show.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me share some exciting news that might compel you to head to the silver screen at your earliest convenience – here’s the lowdown on when the classic horror film Nosferatu will grace UK cinema screens, along with details about its intriguing plot and star-studded cast.

Nosferatu UK release date

On Wednesday, 1st January 2025, I’ll be thrilled to step into a UK cinema and witness the arrival of this film – a fantastic way to ring in the New Year for movie enthusiasts like myself!

That’s one week after its release in the US, where it will debut on Christmas Day.

Nosferatu plot

In a nod to those who have encountered Dracula through various adaptations, the narrative unfolds as a real estate broker is dispatched to meet an ominous client in Transylvania, triggering a chilling chain of occurrences.

In my own words, I’d say: “I found myself drawn into a chilling narrative where I am the haunted young woman entangled in an obsession with a terrifying vampire. This enigmatic creature seems to have an insatiable interest in me, leaving a trail of horror wherever he goes.

In this adaptation, the character Ellen Hutter (played by Lily-Rose Depp) takes center stage more prominently compared to earlier versions. A notable modification made by Eggers is transforming Count Orlok, the vampire protagonist, into a more conventional folklore vampire, deviating from traditional big-screen portrayals.

In his director’s statement, he clarified that the vampire from folklore is not a charming gentleman in formal attire or a romantic, moody figure with a glittering demeanor,” he explained.

“The folk vampire embodies disease, death and sex in a base, brutal and unforgiving way. This is the vampire I wanted to exhume for a modern audience.”

Nosferatu cast

In this revival of the ancient tale, Nosferatu boasts an impressive ensemble, with Bill Skarsgård assuming the central character, Count Orlok, and Lily-Rose Depp delivering a standout performance as Ellen Hutter.

Currently, Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Thomas Hutter, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin portray his friends Friedrich and Anna Harding respectively. Simon McBurney, in turn, stars as Herr Knock – a character who works for Hutter’s boss but secretly collaborates with Orlok.

Additionally, notable characters portrayed by some recurring collaborators of Robert Eggers include Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Siever and Willem Dafoe as Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz.

Noteworthy is the fact that it was prominently featured in the 2000 movie, Shadow of a Vampire – a production that depicted the making-of the 1922 classic, Nosferatu.
