As a long-time fan of David Harbour’s captivating performances, I can confidently say that his portrayal of Frankenstein in Creature Commandos is a testament to his versatility as an actor. His ability to breathe life into such iconic characters, be it Jim Hopper, Red Guardian, or now, the Monster himself, is truly commendable.
Since his debut as Jim Hopper in the initial season of “Stranger Things” in 2016, David Harbour has been a beloved performer whose popularity continues to grow with each passing year, offering him exciting chances to portray captivating new characters that fans adore. In 2021, he ventured into the realm of superheroes with Marvel’s Red Guardian in “Black Widow,” and now, as is common these days, Harbour is exploring the DC Universe by voicing Frankenstein in the animated series “Creature Commandos.” Although he has previously brought well-known characters to life, lending his voice to Frankenstein allows him to embody one of literature’s most iconic characters. The premiere of “Creature Commandos” is scheduled for December 5th on Max.
Harbour explained to ComicBook the reasons behind his unique interpretation of the character Frankenstein, given the multiple perspectives that have emerged throughout history.
The actor shared his thoughts about the character he portrayed, written by James Gunn. He found it significant to bring this complex character to life, a man who is striving to do good despite being pieced together from various experiences, and who struggles with intense narcissism. One aspect he wanted to explore was the idea, reminiscent of Kenneth Branagh’s Frankenstein years ago with Robert De Niro as the monster, where the character is intellectual yet a monster at heart, yearning for companionship. He felt there was an underdeveloped side to this character, where he tries to impress with his intelligence, only for it to give way to intense anger and fervor, born from being stitched together with someone else’s organs.
Regarding whether past portrayals of the character influenced him positively or negatively, Harbour stated, “The classic Boris Karloff version of Frankenstein’s Monster, with its stiff image, is not what mine is about. My interpretation is more dynamic, leaning towards an action hero. I admired Robert De Niro’s portrayal in the film, finding it a unique exploration of the character. However, I felt that movie didn’t quite hit the mark, but I appreciate their innovative approach. I have great respect for Kenneth Branagh and his work, and I’ve always appreciated unconventional takes on the monster, like his. I recall those impressions distinctly.
He mentioned, “I didn’t want to stick rigidly to a certain type or take a clear stance, as I’ve made that error in the past. Instead, I prefer to approach things with a fresh perspective whenever possible. I believe people’s perceptions of Frankenstein are intriguing, portraying this character will allow me to challenge and surprise them due to the script itself, as the Creature Commandos are quite unusual. It’s others’ interpretations that I find most fascinating. My take on it will be distinctive, reflecting my personal interests and the character as written.
Creature Commandos follows an undercover group of imprisoned monstrous beings who are called upon for tasks deemed too perilous for human teams. When all other choices have been exhausted… they represent your final, least desirable choice. The cast features Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
According to James Gunn, he’s aiming for a structure like the MCU, where actors reprise their roles across different platforms and stories can be connected. However, David Harbour clarified that so far, there haven’t been significant discussions about what’s next for Frankenstein.
Regarding the discussions that have occurred, the actor stated, “Indeed, we’ve discussed possibilities, but no definitive decisions have been made. If a live-action project were to materialize for my character, I would favor a blend of techniques. I think James is skilled at blending reality with CGI, as demonstrated in his work on the animals in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, particularly that small, weasel-like creature which I found incredibly emotional and endearing. I believe there’s room for creative experimentation with practical effects enhanced by technology. I also appreciate the charm of a person in a costume, like the Demogorgon from Stranger Things. There’s something magical and immersive about live-action that I find more engaging than digital effects.
Harbour’s newest captivating role as Frankenstein is under discussion, as he clarifies who might emerge victorious in a hypothetical fight involving his Frankenstein, Red Guardian, Hellboy, and Santa Claus.
As a gamer, I’ve got a gut feeling that Santa from “Violent Night” is going to take the crown. There’s just this enchanting allure of Christmas magic that trumps everything else in my book.
Creature Commandos debuts on Max on December 5th.
