As a long-time observer of political dramas and a connoisseur of authentic acting performances, I must say that Andrew Buchan’s portrayal of Wallace Webb in Black Doves is nothing short of remarkable. His ability to humanize a politician, making him feel real and relatable, is truly commendable.
Andrew Buchan discusses his decision to steer clear of portraying a stereotypical political figure in the Netflix’s latest spy thriller, Black Doves.
In simpler terms, an actor from Broadchurch portrays Wallace Webb, a parliamentarian who harbors lofty ambitions to serve as a catalyst for positive change in the government, ultimately aiming to occupy the principal position at number 10.
It’s unbeknownst to him, but Wallace finds himself right in the midst of a larger, ongoing covert mission – the Black Doves operation – as he serves as Helen’s (played by Kiera Knightley) disguise, being her husband.
Wallace remains oblivious to his wife’s secret life as an accomplished spy, one of the rare “idealistic” characters featured in the series.
I’ve found portraying politicians to be quite challenging due to their complex nature, but I made a point to humanize my character – Wallace – to avoid feeling like a mere duplicate or caricature as depicted by Buchan.
When asked about how he connected with the character, he said, “I simply aimed to portray him as a fully-fleshed, three-dimensional individual.” He explained that avoiding a flat, stereotypical depiction was crucial for him, especially considering he was among the few unaware of his wife’s double life.
In the broader political context, Buchan aimed to provide an alternative perspective that viewers might not encounter when watching television interviews with actual politicians.
Currently, there’s a great deal happening globally, particularly politically, and it seems that some politicians have a specific pattern or cadence in their speech, whether you hear them on the radio or elsewhere.
In every instance, there seems to be similar pauses and gestures. I aimed to give him a more authentic feel, with imperfections included.
In the intricate plotline of the show, Buchan acknowledges that even a character as hopeful and principled as Wallace may not escape unharmed amidst all its unexpected events.
Perhaps some of his beliefs might need to adapt as he goes, according to Buchan. Wallace appears to remain steady and consistent amidst any turmoil or upheaval.
