As a dedicated fan who has traversed through countless tales of the unexplained, I must say that the announcement of Mark Gatiss’ latest Ghost Story for Christmas, “Woman of Stone,” has sent shivers down my spine with anticipation. Having grown up with the enchanting world of E Nesbit and her captivating stories, it feels like a dream come true to see one of her works brought to life by none other than Gatiss himself.
This holiday season, acclaimed writer Mark Gatiss, known for his work on Doctor Who and Sherlock, will be giving us a spine-tingling ghost tale. The story for 2021 is inspired by E Nesbit’s “Man-Size in Marble.
It’s been discovered that the titled episode, “Woman of Stone,” isn’t a unique instance where Gatiss incorporates Nesbit’s work into his writings; earlier, he actually referenced it in one of the episodes from Doctor Who.
Gastiss shared: “E Nesbit’s ‘Man-Size in Marble’ was my first encounter with a ghost story, and it made quite an impact on me. In fact, I referenced it in an episode of Doctor Who that I wrote for Peter Capaldi! For years, I’ve been eager to bring this tale to life, but the expense of creating the marble tomb effigies has always been just out of reach.
Fortunately, we received additional funds this year that allowed us to proceed. To create a stark contrast from last year’s male-focused story by Arthur Conan Doyle, I chose to adapt a work by the remarkable woman author, E. Nesbit. The title of the adaptation is ‘Woman of Stone,’ reflecting what I believe are the central themes of the story.
During the time when Capaldi played The Doctor, Gatiss penned three episodes – “Robot of Sherwood,” “Sleep No More,” and “Empress of Mars.” Notably, “Empress of Mars” includes an Ice Queen’s tomb, reminiscent of the tombs in “Man-Size in Marble,” which surprisingly comes to life and walks.
The cast of Woman of Stone includes Éanna Hardwicke from The Sixth Commandment, Celia Imrie from Thursday Murder Club, Monica Dolan from Black Mirror, Mawaan Rizwan from Taskmaster, and Phoebe Horn from Call the Midwife.
In her last days, E Nesbit narrates a spine-tingling story about the newlyweds Jack and Laura from Victorian times.
