As a lifelong fan of classic monster stories and dark psychological thrillers, I must say that DC Universe’s Creature Commandos has truly captivated me with its hauntingly fresh take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The second episode delves deep into the chilling origins of Eric Frankenstein and The Bride, offering a compelling exploration of obsession, creation, and responsibility.
In a fresh and eerie interpretation, the DC Universe’s Creature Commandos series has reimagined Mary Shelley’s poignant exploration of Frankenstein’s story, extending the theme of creation and accountability into an unsettling narrative that traverses centuries. The second episode delves into the chilling genesis of Eric Frankenstein (portrayed by David Harbour) and The Bride (brought to life by Indira Varma), amplifying the psychological terror inherent in the original novel while carving its own dark, twisted route.
In the origin story for the Creature Commandos, Eric Frankenstein follows the key events from Mary Shelley’s seminal novel. As he delved into the mysteries of life and death, he assembled various deceased body parts to create a creature. Later, his son requests a companion, believing it fair for him to have someone to share his existence with. In Shelley’s tale, Dr. Frankenstein declines to repeat past errors, leading Frankenstein’s monster to avenge his actions by murdering the doctor’s wife in a perverse act of justice. However, in the Creature Commandos, Dr. Frankenstein grants his son’s wish, constructing “The Bride.
From my gaming perspective, in the unique world of Creature Commandos, I’m not just a fully-formed Bride like in other adaptations. Instead, I’m on a journey, a blank slate slowly being molded into a woman by the enigmatic Dr. Frankenstein. He’s imparting language to me, helping me understand and navigate this world. It’s an intricate dance between creator and creation, with him gently guiding me towards forming my own identity.
The increasingly strong bond between the Doctor and the Bride, nurtured by their shared educational journey and personal growth, unfolds into a heartbreaking love story. When Eric learns about the Doctor and the Bride’s intimate relationships, he becomes enraged and takes his anger out on his own father. Believing that he deserves the Bride’s affections, Eric eliminates any obstacles to his path towards happiness. Subsequently, the Bride flees, initiating a pursuit that lasts for centuries as Eric relentlessly hunts her down, convinced their connection is genuine. However, his actions are fueled by an unhealthy obsession that ultimately causes harm rather than love.
The series transforms Eric from Shelley’s eloquent, philosophically tortured creature into something far more terrifying: a monster whose horror stems not from his appearance but from his actions. This interpretation feels particularly relevant in contemporary times, where discussions about consent and autonomy have become increasingly prominent. As such, Eric’s endless pursuit of the Bride across centuries serves as a dark metaphor for how patterns of possessive behavior can persist and evolve over time. It also echoes James Gunn’s choice to revamp the Sons of Themyscheras as violent sexists.
Creature Commandos Remix DC Comics for Frankenstein & The Bride
In the DC Comics universe, the tale of Frankenstein unfolds in 1818 when Dr. Victor Frankenstein constructs his creature using the blood of an eternal entity named Melmoth and the essence of fifty deceased souls. By 1820, much like Mary Shelley’s novel, the monster encounters its creator and requests a companion to alleviate its solitude. In 1822, Dr. Frankenstein manufactures the Bride but tries to destroy her prematurely. However, she manages to live on and instead of revealing herself to the Frankenstein’s monster, she escapes to Paris, where she eventually becomes a courtesan in the catacombs.
Over time, Frankenstein and his Bride have encountered one another numerous times. She frequently disagrees with the notion that she is only meant for Frankenstein as a partner, yet they do not harbor animosity towards each other. Surprisingly, they eventually develop feelings for one another and have a child together.
In many of their tales, Frankenstein and his spouse were often depicted as multifaceted yet valiant characters when working for the clandestine government agency known as S.H.A.D.E (Super Human Advanced Defense Executive). This organization specialized in combating supernatural perils. However, their bond was shattered upon learning that S.H.A.D.E had concealed their unborn child, developed it in secret labs, and transformed it into an undead biological weapon. The treachery from the organization they served resulted in their split, with the Bride leaving S.H.A.D.E. and returning to her refuge in the Parisian catacombs.
In the world of Creature Commandos, things take an unusual turn since Franskentein is portrayed as an overly obsessive stalker with fantasies of love, consistently disrupting The Bride’s attempts to rebuild her life. After making the same errors for decades, it seems unlikely that the DCU version of Eric Frankenstein could transform into a hero or capture The Bride’s heart. On the contrary, if Creature Commandos intensifies Franskentein’s villainous persona, he could prove to be a formidable adversary for the heroes of the DC Universe.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
