As a seasoned journalist with years of experience under my belt, I find Cheryl’s journey to be nothing short of captivating. Her ability to share her personal struggles and triumphs with the world, while maintaining an air of grace and resilience, is truly commendable.
Cheryl Burke is waltzing in with her opinion on Dancing With the Stars.
The retired dance expert, who spent 26 seasons as a professional on the competition series before 2022, recently expressed her opinion that the judges of the show should enforce stricter adherence to authentic ballroom dancing techniques, possibly necessitating additional study for contestants.
She remarked during her December 4th podcast episode on Sex, Lies and Spray Tans, “Don’t you think they need to truly understand what they’re discussing?”. “It’s important that they can support their statements with solid reasoning. If someone only uses the correct terms without being able to explain why their viewpoint is valid, it becomes challenging.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to point out an interesting observation made by Burke. The panel of judges, comprising Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli, while incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, should be seen as enthusiasts rather than experts in the specialized field of ballroom dancing. This implies that they may not have the ability to apply stricter standards within this particular genre due to their broader dance backgrounds.
Burke (who was wedded to Matthew Lawrence, known for his role in “Boy Meets World” from 2019 to 2022) strongly advocated that the group should undergo an exam to assess their skills as adjudicators. This test, called an adjudicator’s exam, is administered by the National Dance Council of America. As stated on their website, passing this exam allows individuals to judge national dance competitions across various dance styles.
Just as professional dancers need to keep learning about their art form, I believe it’s important for the judges to do the same.
She continued, “I believe that’s crucial, and honestly, wouldn’t you like to explore that?” After spending so many years, if you haven’t delved into this genre yet, why not take the time to get acquainted with it?
To be frank, I’ve been utterly captivated by the Strictly Come Dancing panel for quite some time now. As much as I adore our beloved judge, the one and only Miss Judy Murray, I can’t help but wonder if they’ve ever had a professional ballroom dancer like the legendary Len Goodman on their team. When asked about this, she graciously replied, “Perhaps they have, I’m not privy to that knowledge. I’m just a fan, after all.
Read on for more of Burke’s candid thoughts over the years.
Cheryl Burke openly shared that leaving “Dancing With the Stars” in 2022 was undeniably tougher on her emotions compared to her separation from Matthew Lawrence, whom she divorced during the same year.
In the April 2024 edition of the Amy & T.J. podcast, she expressed that the show once formed a significant part of her identity. She acknowledged that they played a crucial role in providing her with a platform to express herself.
In retrospect, Cheryl feels that the financial stress caused by her earnings from “Dancing with the Stars” may have negatively impacted her three-year marriage with the actor from “Boy Meets World.
Speaking from personal experience on the show “Amy & T.J”, I realized that love can’t be purchased. Although I couldn’t buy my former spouse, I certainly carried the financial burden as the one who brought home the paycheck, supporting us both.
As a professional dancer on DWTS, the dancer openly discussed the difficulties of not having the freedom to pick a dance partner. In her own words, “once someone steps into that studio, I can’t just leave.
In 2023, she explained to Variety, “This is the world of entertainment,” emphasizing, “I’m a hired hand. I can’t just leave without notice and apologize. That’s not covered in the agreement. It’s a delicate balance.
In simple terms, Cheryl clarified that the rumors suggesting she had a romantic involvement with her ‘Dancing With the Stars’ season eight partner Gilles Marini during their training sessions in 2009 were unfounded.
In the April 2024 episode of the “Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans” podcast, she expressed that there was a connection or understanding between them, without specifically saying they were romantically involved – she referred to it as “chemistry”.
Though Cheryl admitted that the two were “very close,” she said, “Nothing has ever happened physically between us.”
In the midst of her divorce, Cheryl delivered a straightforward response to those criticizing her for oversharing about her personal life on social platforms.
In her interview with TopMob News, she stated, “There’s no need for your comments since I am certain I’m making a difference in at least one person’s life. By the close of day, those who may require it should jot down a few notes and truly grasp that this is someone’s tale.
Cheryl has been open about her sobriety journey, sharing that the 2018 death of her dad was what led her to abstain from alcohol.
In a 2020 episode of the LadyGang podcast, she stated: “My father died, and he was an alcoholic. I saw two paths for me: one led to self-destruction and rehab, while the other was quitting alcohol completely. That’s just who I am – it’s all or nothing.
And the Dance Moms coach isn’t afraid of showing her vulnerable side.
In a June 2021 YouTube video, Cheryl admitted that maintaining her sobriety hasn’t been effortless, stating plainly, “It would be untruthful to suggest it’s been easy.” She further explained that when she hides things or withholds the truth from people, including her followers, that’s when she feels uneasy and fearful.
