As a long-time fan and follower of Ubisoft, I must say that the recent news about their potential sale or buyout has left me feeling like a rollercoaster ride without the fun part – the thrill. The Guillemot family’s discussions with Tencent and other investors have me on edge, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
For some time now, Ubisoft has been facing difficulties, as one after another of its major releases underperformed, including Skull and Bones, XDefiant, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Star Wars Outlaws, and others. This trend has only made the company’s situation more precarious over time. Recently, rumors circulated that the company was in discussions with Tencent – a partial owner of Ubisoft – to go private. Now, additional information about these negotiations has come to light.
According to a report from Reuters, it was stated that the Guillemot family, who are the original founders and significant stakeholders of Ubisoft, have been in talks with Tencent and other financial backers about the possibility of taking over Ubisoft through a management-led acquisition.
According to recent reports, the Guillemot clan is working on a plan to maintain ownership of their company. On the other hand, Tencent seems to be pushing for more influence in future board matters, while understanding the possibility of outside investors launching a hostile takeover. At present, Tencent appears content with its 10% stake in Ubisoft and is prepared to wait until the Guillemot family agrees to a deal.
A representative from Ubisoft stated, “We’re dedicated to making choices that benefit everyone involved. In light of this, it’s worth mentioning that we are also examining all potential strategies for our company.
This year, a minority stakeholder hedge fund named AJ Investments acquired enough shares of Ubisoft to potentially make the company a private entity, due to continuous drops in the company’s stock prices. Learn more about it by clicking here.
