As a die-hard Marvel fan and a lover of the ever-lovin’, blue-eyed Thing, I am beyond thrilled about Ben Grimm’s upcoming solo adventure! The thought of this unassuming, hardworking man from Yancy Street taking down a criminal conspiracy while battling some of Marvel’s most iconic villains is nothing short of exhilarating.
In the upcoming months, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s character, The Thing, will become a fugitive, as he is embroiled in a criminal plot connected to his past on Yancy Street. This unfolds right before the Fantastic Four make their grand entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, Ben Grimm stars in a fresh solo series, kicking off in March, preceding the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July on the big screen.
In this limited series spanning five issues, writer Tony Fleecs, who first appeared in Marvel Comics with “Venom War: Wolverine,” and renowned Fantastic Four artist Leonard Kirk (of “Star Wars: Battle of Jakku” and “Sabretooth”) present “The Thing.” In this storyline, Ben, typically a member of the Fantastic Four, decides to tackle a criminal conspiracy. However, the mastermind behind the plot has put a bounty on the team’s tough guy, which leads to a series of encounters with various iconic Marvel villains, such as Bullseye and Juggernaut.
In this series, it’s ‘The Thing’ who takes on the challenge of the Marvel Universe! Although Ben Grimm was once a skinny kid from Yancy Street, he’s now one of the strongest members of the Fantastic Four. When an old acquaintance sets him on a mission to find a missing child, the Thing finds himself wanted by the authorities. Prepare yourself for the Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing going head-to-head with every superpowered villain and bounty hunter in New York City! Fleecs and Kirk delve into Ben Grimm’s past, showing why he is the soul of the Marvel Universe…and why you don’t want him to hear you say that!
Fleecs expressed his affection for Ben Grimm, stating that he’s an ordinary, diligent individual who also possesses superpowers. What makes him special is his down-to-earth nature; despite the extraordinary cosmic events swirling around him, he remains unimpressed and true to himself, much like Jack Kirby.
“The intriguing aspect of this book lies in guessing what might surprise The Thing. Who would catch him off guard? With that idea in mind, we’re presenting an assortment of villains from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Our aim is to pair him with opponents you wouldn’t anticipate. Leonard Kirk is drawing The Thing! Trust me, you’ll witness Benjamin Grimm taking down foes he hasn’t defeated before.
Kirk expressed his excitement, using a playful pun, about returning to work on the Fantastic Four series, specifically focusing on Ben Grimm, the beloved orange-skinned, boxing hero. He mentioned that the villains he’ll be drawing vary from those who are less serious to those who are truly iconic. The first issue was already a blast for him, and he’s eagerly anticipating the rest of the series.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach teases Thing suit for Fantastic Four movie
Actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach recently graced the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February. He discussed his impending Marvel debut during the interview. It was then disclosed that his portrayal of The Thing would involve motion capture technology, and he even uttered the iconic catchphrase “It’s clobberin’ time.
Previously, they may have used a suit for the role. Michael Chiklis found this suit to be quite uncomfortable, and it seems that… we’ve moved beyond that. Moss-Bachrach stated that nowadays, it’s more like cosplay or amateurish with the technology we have available.
He mentioned that he found out in early August about joining the MCU. This information came up when he was asked about it. During a stroll in the city, mid-writer’s strike, his agent called him unexpectedly. He had no work on his mind at the time. His agent said, “They want you to play The Thing.” He was utterly surprised by this news.
Moss-Bachrach disclosed that the Fantastic Four cast members have a group chat, which he joined after Pedro initiated it a few days ago. Everyone has contributed to the conversation by sending images, gifs, or stickers, indicating that they are all actively participating and not holding back.
Issue #1 of “The Thing” comic series by Tony Fleecs and Leonard Kirk hits shelves on March 5, 2025.
