As a seasoned Pokémon Go player with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement when new additions like Sinistea and Polteageist are introduced to the game. The anticipation leading up to their debut was palpable in the community, and finally getting a chance to catch them has been an absolute joy.
The mythical Pokemon creatures known as Sinistea and its evolved form Polteageist are now available in Pokemon Go. To catch a Sinistea, players must join Raid Battles during its debut event. Those eager for this new addition should be ready to focus when the time comes. One of the unique aspects of Sinistea is its lore, particularly the distinction between its counterfeit and antique forms. However, some Pokemon Go fans may be curious about how to identify which version of Sinistea they’ve captured.
During the “Just My Cup of Tea” event from December 3rd to December 7th, 2024, Sinistea will be appearing in One-Star Raids in Pokemon Go. Since it’s not yet known when it will return, this weekend offers an excellent opportunity to utilize your raid invites from friends to catch them.
Initially, when this Pokemon was introduced, a primary query among players was whether it would possess both the False and Ancient forms in Pokemon Go, similar to its portrayal in the original games. Indeed, it does have both forms; however, Niantic hasn’t emphasized the distinction much, leaving some gamers puzzled about how to identify which form they’ve captured.

The less common variant among the two is Antique Form Sinistea, which can be identified by a small label at the base of its container that signifies its antiquity. This detail has prompted some Pokemon Go players to scrutinize their Sinistea using AR (Augmented Reality) mode, experimenting with different angles to determine if the label is present.
It’s fortunate that we have not one but two distinct methods to identify Phony Form Sinistea and Antique Form Sinistea effectively. Despite the fact that these Pokemon do not have individual Pokedex entries, many players are eager to acquire both versions to complete their collection accurately.
How to Tell if Sinistea is Phony Form or Antique Form
The secret lies in evaluating your Sinistea, something trainers aiming for a 3-star rating usually do already. By requesting your Team Leader to evaluate this Black Tea Pokemon, they’ll provide feedback on whether it’s a False or Ancient Form Sinistea, as well as the star rating and catch specifics.
I don’t like the looks of this Sinistea. It look…

After an appraisal, players are adopting unique nicknames such as “the clever Artificial Sinistea” instead, making it easier for trainers to distinguish one Pokemon from another without constantly checking the appraise feature.
That said, there is another difference between the two forms that may be quicker to spot. Phony Form Sinistea evolves into Polteageist for 50 Sinistea Candy. However, the Antique Form requires a whopping 400 Candies to evolve. This helpful tip makes it that much easier to spot the difference, as an expensive teacup apparently requires an expensive evolution to go along with it. Despite the Candy cost difference, there isn’t a huge difference between the two Polteageist forms, but the amount of chipping is slightly different between them.
In Niantic’s initial reveal of the Pokemon, the information wasn’t explicitly clear. However, fortunately, fans have collaborated and deciphered a way to distinguish between different Sinistea types, as well as determining if one should save up 400 Candies for that particular Antique Form Polteageist.
