As a fan who has been following Superman‘s journey across various media, I must say that my heart swells with pride for Tyler Hoechlin and his portrayal of the Man of Steel in “Superman & Lois.” The show’s final seasons truly did justice to Clark Kent’s iconic suit, cape, and S-shield.

The fourth season of “Superman & Lois” marks the conclusion of Tyler Hoechlin’s journey as Superman, the Man of Steel. Notably, the series ends with a superior Kryptonian suit compared to the one Hoechlin’s Superman initially wore. After making an appearance as a guest star on “Supergirl,” also on The CW, Tyler Hoechlin ascended to lead his own show, “Superman & Lois.” Initially maintaining a flexible and vague connection to the Arrowverse, during the Season 2 finale, it was disclosed that “Superman & Lois” takes place on a different Earth, in a distinct universe from the Arrowverse.

It’s worth noting that hints about this change were evident all along, not only in the distinct tone between Superman & Lois and the Arrowverse, but also through Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman sporting a completely new costume compared to his earlier appearance on Supergirl. In truth, the evolution of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman suit is as captivating as his Kal-El journey, and it culminates in one of the finest live-action Superman costumes ever crafted.

Superman’s Arrowverse Suit Wasn’t Great

Initially, when Tyler Hoechlin took on the role of Superman in Supergirl, the response was somewhat divided. Apart from his participation in the Crisis On Infinite Earths miniseries, Hoechlin’s Superman didn’t make a significant impact in the Arrowverse, and unfortunately, he became more of an afterthought within the franchise. A contributing factor to this was that his Superman costume in the Arrowverse wasn’t as impressive as other versions of the Man of Steel’s iconic attire.

In the TV series known as ‘Superman & Lois’, the creators aimed to address problems that had been noticed in Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman costume within the Arrowverse. The S-shield on this suit was a simplified version of the traditional emblem, lacking a unique character or identity. Furthermore, the clips securing the cape to Superman’s shoulders were often distracting and made the overall appearance seem less impressive than its counterparts in various big-screen adaptations.

Superman & Lois Made A Huge Suit Upgrade – But There Were Still Some Issues

Initially, the Kryptonian outfit worn by Superman in the series “Superman & Lois” marked a significant upgrade compared to its previous version in the Arrowverse. The new suit boasted greater shape and substance, making Superman appear more dominant in his own show. However, it’s worth noting that during seasons one and two, the show was still refining Kal-El’s suit to achieve the ideal look.

As a gamer, I noticed in Season 1, the Superman suit often made Ty Hoechlin look bulkier than he actually is, which sometimes gave Superman an oversized, disproportionate upper body in certain scenes. Interestingly, during the flashbacks to his early career on ‘Superman & Lois’, he wore a suit reminiscent of the Max Fleischer ’40s Superman serials that better fit Hoechlin’s build and figure, making it more proportionate.

In essence, the television series “Superman & Lois” did a commendable job of minimizing any distractions related to the suit’s proportions, similar to how the Arrowverse dealt with cape clips in the past. The imperfect suit dimensions were not always noticeable unless viewed under specific lighting conditions or angles. Season 2 made a significant effort to reduce the oversized chest and overall build, but it wasn’t until Season 3 of “Superman & Lois” that they truly nailed the suitable costume for Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman.

In the third season’s comeback of “Superman & Lois,” it was evident that the suit had been revamped yet again, this time with a noticeable improvement. The suit and cape now sported a richer navy-blue-and-maroon hue, while the S-shield on Hoechlin’s chest took on a fully-textured form, representing the Kryptonian crest as it should. The suit would undergo its most impressive transformation following Superman’s death and resurrection in Season 4.

In a richer shade of navy blue and maroon, the cape and suit, the Superman emblem adorned not just textured but subtly glowing with a golden hue of yellow behind it. For the first time, the S emblem on Tyler Hoechlin’s chest seemed more prominent than ever, especially during Superman & Lois‘s Season 4 – a fitting touch indeed, as Clark tears open his shirt to expose the S-shield in the Smallville diner, revealing his secret identity to the world at last.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the suit worn by Hoechlin on Superman & Lois Season 4 was influenced by Henry Cavill’s suit from Man of Steel, particularly its chainmail structure. Furthermore, during Superman’s dramatic reveal in the Smallville diner, viewers got a close-up view of the new suit design just as a bullet was about to hit him. This offered an exciting glimpse of the rivets on the suit, which were cleverly designed to resemble miniature S-shields connected together – a subtle Easter egg for eagle-eyed fans.

After eight years, a leap between universes, and several seasons of a solo series, the Superman portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin in Superman & Lois finally received a costume that truly lived up to the Man of Steel’s stature. This was particularly evident in Seasons 3 and 4, where they successfully designed a Superman suit that complemented Hoechlin’s exceptional performance with an equally impressive and iconic rendition of the classic Kryptonian outfit, including the suit, cape, and S-shield.
