As a longtime fan of the DC Universe, it’s both heartening and bittersweet to witness the birth of this new era with “Creature Commandos.” Having grown up in the days of the DC Extended Universe, I can’t help but reminisce about the grandiose plans for TV shows like “Justice League Dark” that never quite made it off the ground.
The fresh DC Universe kicks off officially with the new animated TV series, “Creature Commandos,” streaming on Max. This new cinematic universe’s inception through such a production underscores James Gunn’s future ambitions for DC Comics adaptations across various media platforms. It also highlights how contemporary cultural properties often span multiple screens, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and even Game of Thrones all extending their narratives across both small and big screens.
In simpler terms, the precursor to the DC Universe, known as the DC Extended Universe, briefly delved into multimedia projects like the HBO Max series “Peacemaker,” spun off from “The Suicide Squad.” However, the upcoming series “Creature Commandos” and its assortment of peculiar DC characters strongly resemble the initial, more ambitious plans for TV shows within the DC Extended Universe. Originally, there were grand plans to introduce a large number of monstrous DC Extended Universe heroes on television.
The Justice League Dark TV Show Universe Experiment
Back in early 2021, I heard whispers about an exciting DC project that was brewing for HBO Max’s debut – a show called “Justice League Dark.” This series would be similar to its comic book counterpart, where it brings together diverse and supernatural DC heroes and anti-heroes to combat powerful otherworldly threats. J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions were supposed to oversee these shows as part of a deal Abrams signed with WarnerMedia in 2019. The first project from this partnership, rumored to make its appearance soon, would be a fresh take on the character John Constantine.
Previously, Constantine had graced the small screen due to an NBC series in the mid-2010s and multiple subsequent roles within the Arrowverse. This innovative portrayal would have featured a performer of color as the character. Simultaneously, a show named Madame X was being created that summer, intended to expand upon the Justice League Dark segment of the DC Extended Universe by focusing on Madame Xanadu.
It seems likely that the characters from Justice League Dark were selected to spearhead multiple TV series within the DC Extended Universe due to practical reasons. Instead of attempting to fit actors like Henry Cavill or Gal Gadot into the financial constraints of television productions, it was considered simpler and more feasible to work with these standalone characters. At that time in the early 2020s, the DC Extended Universe on the big screen was experiencing a phase of change, with new concepts such as The Suicide Squad and Black Adam presenting fresh perspectives on the franchise’s direction. By concentrating on various independent figures within their designated corners of the DC Extended Universe, the creative teams behind these TV shows were granted greater creative freedom.
The Death of the DC Extended Universe TV Shows
In the beginning of 2022, AT&T transferred ownership of WarnerMedia assets to Discovery, resulting in the formation of WarnerDiscovery. This new company gained control over DC Comics and all related adaptations. As the year progressed, shows like “Constantine” and “Madame X” were cancelled due to poor performance. The future of the DC Extended Universe looked uncertain, with these specific Max TV Shows not expected to survive. However, the success of “Peacemaker,” the only DC Extended Universe TV show that aired, further bolstered WarnerDiscovery’s faith in James Gunn’s approach to these characters.
In early 2023, it was revealed that the newly created DC Studios would introduce the DC Multiverse, marking the conclusion of the DC Cinematic Universe as we knew it. If this hadn’t occurred, it’s likely that the expansive TV plans for the DC Cinematic Universe wouldn’t have materialized in their entirety. The failure of several 2023 TV series like “Secret Invasion” dampened the enthusiasm of studio executives for creating countless streaming spin-offs from big-screen movies. Regardless of whether the DC Cinematic Universe had ended or not, these properties may not have been intended to reach full fruition.
Despite the passage of time, the DC Universe now commences with a television series featuring an ensemble cast of anti-heroes from horror-themed DC Comics, who band together to confront formidable adversaries.
