As a long-time fan who has witnessed the ebb and flow of superhero cinematic universes, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by the current state of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The potential that this universe held back in 2018 was nothing short of exhilarating, a promise of endless adventures from the web-slinger’s rogues gallery. Yet, as we stand on the precipice of Kraven the Hunter, it seems the once promising universe may be on its last legs.
The responsibility on Kraven the Hunter’s shoulders goes beyond merely catching his next prey. This movie, in fact, holds the destiny of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. This interconnected universe started with Venom in 2018 and was initially planned to generate numerous projects, aiming to provide Sony/Columbia Pictures with wealth for years ahead. However, in reality, achieving this has turned out to be a challenging task. So far, only the Venom movies have been box office hits worldwide… but even the third one didn’t perform as well in the U.S. as expected.
Efforts to produce movies like Venom, featuring Morbius and Madame Web, have led to numerous humorous memes online, yet there seems to be little affection for these films or box office triumph. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe finds itself in a vulnerable position, hanging by a thread. If Kraven manages a home run at the box office, it might save this cinematic universe. However, if Kraven fails, does that mean the end of this cinematic universe altogether?
The Future Doesn’t Look Bright For Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
At the moment, it seems that the future of additional installments in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is uncertain. No new projects apart from Venom have begun filming since Madame Web in July 2022. Highly anticipated productions like El Muerto and Olivia Wilde’s untitled Sony/Marvel project have experienced delays in development. Furthermore, it has been two years since any updates were shared about Donald Glover’s Hypno-Hustler movie. Currently, there are no upcoming films scheduled for the Sony Spider-Man Universe, even if Kraven the Hunter turns out to be as successful as John Wick 4.
It’s not very convincing that this storyline will continue, given that Tom Hardy’s Venom character seems to be on hiatus for now. Even before ‘Kraven the Hunter’ is released, it seems Sony might be backing away from their commitment to this Spider-Man franchise. Meanwhile, the animated Spider-Verse films have gained significant popularity and financial success, overshadowing what Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was intended to achieve. With another profitable non-MCU franchise to focus on, Sony may be shifting its attention away from this one.
In recent times, superhero films from the 2020s have shown more unpredictability when it comes to box office success. Gone are the days where a movie like Venom could effortlessly rake in over $800 million worldwide. Even Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t manage to gross $500+ million globally, and Marvel titles like The Marvels struggled to surpass $100 million domestically. These Spider-Man spin-offs, which were initially thought of as easy box office successes for Sony/Columbia, have not lived up to expectations, with movies such as Morbius and Madame Web actually losing money instead. This shift in fortune has made the continuation of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe seem less appealing to executives. An idea that seemed promising back in 2018 now appears riskier six years down the line.
The Shifting Profile of Sony/Columbia Pictures
Maybe the greatest argument against Sony/Columbia Pictures continuing Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is simply the studio’s evolving position in the cinematic landscape over the last seven years. Venom was officially announced in early 2017, roughly two years into Tom Rothman taking over Columbia Pictures and trying to turn things around. The idea of giving this studio its own cinematic universe (one that it didn’t need help from Kevin Feige to realize) must’ve sounded divine for a studio that, in 2015, only grossed $965 million domestically.
The Last Dance” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” Titles like “A Man Called Otto” and “No Hard Feelings,” released in 2023, even outperformed “Madame Web” in North America. And to add to the excitement, their relationship with Marvel Studios is set for a long-term partnership, ensuring that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will no longer be Columbia’s sole live-action superhero saga.
In 2017, Columbia Pictures was counting heavily on films like “The Dark Tower” to revive their studio, and they looked towards Sony’s Spider-Man Universe for help. However, by 2024, this is no longer necessary as evidenced by the studio’s 2025 lineup which includes movies such as “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey”, “Caught Stealing”, and “Animal Friends”. Instead of planning a sequel to “Morbius”, they are now focusing on projects like these. The unpredictable performance of modern superhero films doesn’t pose as much of a threat to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe as their current prosperity does. Rothman openly stating that Sony’s future projects will not be as heavily reliant on Intellectual Properties (IP) simply reinforces this shift in strategy.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must admit that the success of “Kraven the Hunter” could potentially derail the current course of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. If this film featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson turns out to be a blockbuster hit, it might prompt Sony to expedite the production of projects like “Sinister Six,” “Silver & Black,” and a standalone movie for The Wall. At this moment, it seems that an extraordinary box office performance is needed to alter the trajectory of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Unless something unexpected happens, “Kraven the Hunter” appears to mark the end (for now) of the franchise’s journey.
