As a dedicated fan who’s been following My Hero Academia since its early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe when I reflect on how much Iida has grown. When he first appeared, I saw him as just another sidekick-type character, someone to bounce ideas off Deku with. Boy, was I wrong!
In a change of pace for creator Kohei Horikoshi, who’s now free following the conclusion of My Hero Academia’s manga, he has been hinting at starting a new project while revisiting his shonen universe through original artwork. This break in schedule has given him ample opportunity to address fan queries and reflect on the significant developments that catapulted UA Academy into global popularity among anime enthusiasts. One of his favorite characters underwent some unexpected transformations, with the entire cast of Class 1-A playing a pivotal role in shaping this anime powerhouse, and one character in particular has adapted to the times.
As a diehard fan, I must admit that Iida’s progression left Kohei Horikoshi astonished. Initially, Turbo Hero: Ingenium didn’t seem to match up to legends like All For One and One For All in the world of “My Hero Academia.” However, he proved his mettle by becoming one of the top heroes in Class 1-A. His moment to truly shine came during the anime’s second season when he courageously faced off against Hero Killer Stain. Driven by a deep desire for retribution after his brother was severely wounded by Stain, Iida didn’t hesitate to put himself on the line in pursuit of justice.

The Iida Revelation
In a recent comment, mangaka Kohei Horikoshi revealed that among his characters, Iida underwent the most significant transformation from his initial concept. He explained that he initially saw Iida as a peer who could interact with Deku on equal terms, but never anticipated that he would become the embodiment of this manga’s essence. In fact, Iida turned out to be more remarkable than Horikoshi had ever imagined.
Iida may not have been personally involved in a decisive fight during the latest anime’s final war, but he played a crucial role in facilitating a critical encounter. To bring Shoto Todoroki and his brother Dabi together, Iida utilized his Quirk effectively, moving at supersonic speeds to orchestrate an unprecedented family reunion. Despite the defeat of villains such as Dabi, Spinner, Toga, and others, Shigaraki and All For One remain significant threats in the anime, promising epic battles during the eighth and final season.
Iida’s Future
In the closing chapters of the My Hero Academia manga, Hero Society presents a stark contrast to its former self. Spoilers aside, Iida appears to be recovering from the aftermath of the final war, and although his individual journey may have concluded within the superhero shonen series, his impact and legacy will endure, sharing the spotlight with his UA Academy peers in future narratives.
