As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a fondness for soap operas that rivals my love for classic films, I must say the return of Richard Hillman to Coronation Street is akin to Bette Davis making a comeback from the grave in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”. The chills and thrills of his reign of terror on Weatherfield are still fresh in my memory, much like the smell of popcorn lingering long after leaving the cinema.
It seems that the character Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth on the show Coronation Street, could have an unanticipated guest before she departs this year.
According to The Sun, it’s been announced that actor Brian Capron will reappear on the streets of Coronation Street, playing the role of Gail Platt’s deceitful spouse Richard Hillman. Remarkably, this character is said to have perished 21 years ago after a car accident, followed by drowning.
This time, however, the character is set to return as a ghost.
In a past time, Richard Hillman was infamous for his fearsome demeanor, instilling fear in the Platt family and numerous other inhabitants of Weatherfield.
Among the plotlines from his history are: abandoning his business associate Dougie Ferguson to perish, killing his former spouse Patricia, abducting Gail, Sarah, and David, and arson, specifically burning down Audrey’s home (his mother-in-law).
The character is slated to reappear in a visionary form, just as Gail readies herself for marriage with Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson). This apparition could potentially alter the trajectory of her life somehow.
Upon Capron’s arrival back, a source revealed to The Sun: “This is a significant acquisition – and it marks the first instance where a character has come back as a spirit.
At that point, the disturbing events were quite significant, and Gail’s ill-advised decision to marry her ex-husband Richard became a major plot point in her narrative. Additionally, Richard’s tyranny in Weatherfield was another significant aspect of their shared storyline.
“Of course, Richard perished but he is back from the dead and there will be scenes of dialogue between him and Gail. She is clearly still haunted by him.”
Indeed, I can’t help but express my feelings as a dedicated fan, with the recent news that Helen Worth is bidding farewell to Corrie after an incredible 50-year journey on this beloved ITV soap opera. What an extraordinary chapter in television history we’ve witnessed!
As she departed, Worth remarked, “This seemed like the ideal year for me to part ways with the show, having celebrated an incredible 50 years in what I consider to be the best job on the finest street the world has to offer.
At the beginning of the year, I chose to take a certain action and had a conversation with the producers who were incredibly accommodating.
I’ve felt incredibly fortunate each week, receiving outstanding scripts, and working alongside exceptional talents like actors, directors, and an amazing team.
She mentioned, “The last 50 years seem to have gone by so quickly, and it hasn’t fully registered with me that I’m about to depart.
